Buying accident damaged bike

I'm looking at buying a 2005 ZX12.
Can get one that has been in an accident.
A car ran into the side of the owner.
As the bike slid on the road the engine stator cover got broken.
The guy said that as soon as he and the bike came to a halt he switched the kill switch.
Then oil started to come out of the broken engine stator cover.

I would like to know if I should be worried about the motor bearings?
Could the motor have run without oil for the period it went down and slid across the road?

What else could I look at in an attempt to figure out if the motor is in a good condition?

Any pointer will be appreciated.

Minja,

Don't buy it !! Give me the guys number and i'll buy it to make sure you don't get screwed !!
Is it a private seller ?? The tip-over switch should have shut off the bike once it was on it's side. I would see if you can find a used stator cover or fix the leak temporally and bolt it on and make sure the oil level is good and see if It'll fire up. Watch the oil light and listen for any bad noises.

Let us know how you make out.... Roy

The main thing I'd be worried about isn't the motor, but the frame. Does anything look like it was knocked crooked? Front end? Swingarm? It can be really hard to tell until you ride it and find it wants to turn one way more than the other. But if it was a minor knock and the force wasn't transferred through the wheels, I would imagine that part should be ok.

as you can buy one for $3-$4K now, the cost of fixing everything especially the frame is not worth the purchase price. Find one that's clean & straight. I've seen them around here for as low as $3,000. No reason to buy a bent one....price in parts along could go over $4/5K.....

If it has a salvage title it can be hard to get registered.

The tip over switch should have already switch the motor off long before the ride got back to the handle bars to switch the kill switch off... Makes a man wonder about his story...

You have a tip over switch that actually works? Mine didn't, new crank, bearings, rods, and pistons, to fix it.
