Subject: great speech from a "Rally for America"
This is outstanding. This lady tells it like it is.
Last week, the Shelby County Alabama Legislative Delegation hosted a
"Stand Up for America Rally." More than 1,200 people attended
including featured speakers Chief Justice Roy Moore, Adjutant General
Mark Bowen and Alabama State Auditor Beth Chapman.
Attached is a copy of Mrs. Chapman's speech, which resulted in five
standing ovations, tremendous applause and an encore.
I hope you enjoy it as we continue to "Stand up for America!"
Stand Up for America Rally Speech

I'm here tonight because men and women of the United States military
have given their lives for my freedom. I am not here tonight because
Sheryl Crowe, Rosie O'Donnell, Martin Sheen, George Clooney, Jane
Fonda or Phil Donahue, sacrificed their lives for me.
If my memory serves me correctly, it was not movie stars or
musicians, but the United States Military who fought on the shores of
Iwo Jima, the jungles of Vietnam, and the beaches of Normandy.
Tonight, I say we should support the President of the United States
and the U.S. Military and tell the liberal, tree-hugging,
Birkenstock-wearing, hippy, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies
and music and whine somewhere else.
After all, if they lived in Iraq, they wouldn't be allowed the freedom
of speech they're being given here today. Ironically, they would be
put to death at the hands of Saddam Hussein or Osama Bin Laden. I want
to know how the very people who are against war because of the loss of
life, can possibly be the same people who are for abortion?
They are the same people who are for animal rights but against the
rights of the unborn. The movie stars say they want to go to Iraq and
serve as "human shields" for the Iraqis. I say let them buy a one-way
ticket and go.
No one likes war. I hate war! But the one thing I hate more is the
fact that this country has been forced into war-innocent people have
lost their lives - - and there but for the grace of God, it could have
been my brother, my husband, or even worse my own son.
On December 7, 1941, there are no records of movie stars treading the
blazing waters of Pearl Harbor.
On September 11, 2001; there are no photos of movie stars standing as
"human shields" against the debris and falling bodies ascending from
the World Trade Center. There were only policemen and firemen -
-underpaid civil servants who gave their all with nothing expected in
return.
When the USS Cole was bombed, there were no movie stars guarding the
ship -- where were the human shields then?
If America's movie stars want to be human shields, let them shield the
gang-ridden streets of Los Angeles, or New York City, let them shield
the lives of the children of North Birmingham whose mothers lay them
down to sleep on the floor each night to shelter them from stray
bullets.
If they want to be human shields, I say let them shield the men and
women of honesty and integrity that epitomizes courage and embody the
spirit of freedom by wearing the proud uniforms of the United States
Military. Those are the people who have earned and deserve shielding!
Throughout the course of history, this country has remained free, not
because of movie stars and liberal activists, but because of brave men
and women who hated war too. However, they lay down their lives so
that we all may live in freedom. After all - "What greater love hath
no man, that he lay down his life for his friend," or in this case a
country.
We should give our military honor and acknowledgement and not let
their lives be in vain. If you want to see true human shields, walk
through Arlington Cemetery. There lie human shields, heroes, and the
BRAVE Americans who didn't get on television and talk about being a
human shield - they were human shields.
I thank God tonight for freedom - - those who bought and paid for it
with their lives in the past - - those who will protect it in the
present and defend it in the future.
America has remained silent too long! God-fearing people have remained
silent too long!
We must lift our voices united in a humble prayer to God for guidance
and the strength and courage to sustain us throughout whatever the
future may hold.
After the tragic events of Sept. 11th, my then eleven -year-old son
said terrorism is a war against them and us and if you're not one of
us, then you're one of them.
So in closing tonight, let us be of one accord, let us stand proud,
and let us be the human shields of prayer, encouragement and support
for the President, our troops and their families and our country.
May God bless America, the land of the free, the home of the brave and
the greatest country on the face of this earth.

If you look at things closely it is all about the election. I wish we could honestly seperate the politics out of it. I read an article from a reporter that found the majority of anti war folks were Gore supporters. That doesn't mean Gore is bad or that he would not have done something similar it is just that Gore supporters want to vote against or be against Bush.

pretty heavy on the religious intonations, that speech is. obviously i got no right to tell her what to say, but i find it a bit disturbing simply for the reason that religion is the main cause of a large part of what the US is fighting now. i'm just afraid of seeing the pendulum swinging too far to the other side. quite frankly, that kind of religious talk scares me.

Freek it is one thing to talk about religion, and to have faith etc. And the United States came about because of religious freedom. And it is pretty obvious that a country formed by Christians that is now well over 200 years old has shown itself to be pretty damn tolerant and acceptable of others.
There is a big difference in talking about ones faith then making others have the same faith and live according to your religion. It is interesting how non religious people who make up a very small minority of this country have decided that everything with a religious theme or thought is offensive and that they should not be exposed to it. Of course that persons behavior is or maybe offensive to others but that is OK! I have a friend eho is not at all religious, he is offended by the fact that a football team has a prayer in the locker room before the game. Mind you he is not a player or in the locker room but he is offended and wants the behavior stopped. So if you are worried about intolerance you might start by looking at the the otherside of this equation.
And as for this religious war.. I would point out that Saddam nor his sons have zero religion in their bones. They are TV evangalists. They rely on the ignorance of the people to buy their BS. Ignorance breeds fanatics and easily manipulated people. If the United States were going to have forced religion and fanatics running our country this would have occurred well over 200 years ago.

Interesting how non-coalition countries always try to find a 'simple' explanation of what the US is doing that will justify their letting a genocidal maniac remain in power and threaten the entire world with chemical and biological weapons.

zhool, first of all let me say that i have nothing against religion in and of itself; it is the misuse of religion that scares me. granted religion is fairly benign in america, as opposed to most of the middle east. as u pointed out, religion played a major role in forming america, and a generally positive role at that. nevertheless, we all know what religion can lead to when abused as a tool of power, so i believe it's necessary to keep that possibility in the back of people's minds even when faced with a basically innocent speech as the one above. most of the religious references are definitel quite innocent and acceptable in my mind. however there is a slight intonation of christians (and maybe catholics, protestants etc) rising up, and altho only a very slight undertone, it warrants a slightly raised eyebrow to me. let it also be said that even if she were considerably more blatant, i'm not one to say she cant sa it. she can believe and say more or less whatever she wants, but the more she sas, the more i'll counter, which is of course the whole point of freedom of speech. but i would like to end by saying that the speech is defnitly a good and true one in my mind, and dont let my cautionairy statements detract from the speech itself or suggest my disagreement with the point of her speech.
as to the locker room thing... ur friend is an idiot. what goes on in the locker room is none of his business, unless his young son is in there perhaps. and even if he is.. well, either just tell ur son to sit the praer out, pull ur son out of the team, or teach him tolerance. he can sit and bow his head during the prayer to respect his fellow players and their deeply fealt beliefs, tho he doesnt have to recite the prayer or say amen or believe in it. that's generally the attitude i take. i'm not gonna get offended if i'm at someone's house for dinner and they pray. i'll bow my head and be silent in respect.
and as far as saddam is concerned... i agree 100%. i actaully just read an article this morning (fomr a less than academic newspaper mind u) that talked about how saddam publicly "embraced" the islamic religion after the last war in a bid for power, and went on a mosque building spree. aparently this move was modeled after stalin, as is most of saddam's political career. saddam is definitely one of the worst examples of religious abuse. he doesnt even believe in it himself, and is using it to drag civilians fom neighbouring countries into the war. the regime is convincing people of islam that the war is against muslim people, when it so clearly is not. frankly i can't understand how people are fooled by this when they see so much evidence to the contrary with their own eyes. i can only guess that these volunteers are just incredibly stupid. spouting to journalists about how the war is all part of the zionist dream. give me a fucking break!
