Lotsa flags out today

Up at the local mall, folks were lined up for hundreds of feet with flag waving, in support of our troops. Wow, what a sight! Really stirred my love of this country, seeing all the people out. Zhooligan had come by to give me a ride back to my house from the car stereo place where I was having my Escort SR-7 and ZR-3 detector/shifter put in, and it was like driving in a parade on the way back, only I wouldn't call his 1 ton a float!

It was a very inspirational moment. big crowd and very supportive and proud. A little later in the day I came across a lone anti-war protester on another street corner. I could help but notice the lady with her sign. I disagreed with her message but I also admired her courage to stand alone and voice her position peacefully and I was also struck with pride in my country that enables us to have freedom of speech.

Sad part about this time period, is the media chooses to air the 2 lone anti-war protesters instead of the huge support which does exist!!

Check this out. If I was a student at this school there'd be hell to pay for this.

A group of Ohio college students who wanted to hang U.S. flags on a school building were told they couldn't because the flags might hurt the feelings of anti-war folks, reports the Ohio News Network.

Melissa Paxton, a student at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, wanted to show support for the troops. "I was raised to be a firm believer in my country and you know, support what's going on," she said.

But Vice President of the Administration Ransom Clark feared the flags could cause problems. "I was afraid that a major display of American flags would represent a signal if done by the college to those people who are opposing the war that we're coming down against them," he said.

The students say they will hang flags outside of their homes instead.

Otis, that's sad.

We're afraid to show our own damned flag in public. That's a fookin shame.

Everybody's been sued and harrased and now school officials are paralyzed by fear of being sued.

Too bad.

My flag flies every day in front of my house.

Here is a current story in the West Palm area about an ex Marine that put up a flag pole in front of his house. This is crazy....

Flag fight drags on -- foreclosure looms

By Peter Franceschina | Florida Correspondent

WEST PALM BEACH -- A Jupiter man who has been battling his homeowners association over his 12-foot flagpole could lose his house after a judge ruled that the association can force him into a foreclosure sale to collect legal fees.

George Andres, a 66-year-old former Marine, vowed to continue the fight to display his patriotism all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Indian Creek Phase 3B Homeowners Association permits flags flown only from wall brackets attached to homes, and its members insist the dispute is about the flagpole. But Andres, a retired electrician, said he has a right to fly the flag from the pole.

Friday's ruling is the latest development in the saga, which dates back more than three years and has involved multiple court cases and judges.

Andres lost the main case in the dispute, when the homeowners association sued him. Circuit Judge Catherine Brunson ruled in October 2000 that Andres had to remove the pole, and she later fined him $7,400 -- $100 a day for every day he violated her order.

An appeals court agreed with Brunson that Andres had to remove the pole, but so far he has been defiant.

In a separate case, the association filed a $21,000 lien against his home for legal fees and sought to foreclose on it to collect.

Last year, the Legislature passed a bill designed to alleviate Andres' troubles, and Gov. Jeb Bush signed it into law.

It allows people to fly a removable American flag "in a respectful manner" regardless of homeowners association rules. On Flag Day last year, Bush delivered an American flag to Andres that had flown over the Capitol and helped him raise it on the controversial pole.

The new law was made retroactive, so it would apply to Andres, but it was passed long after the lien was filed in October 2000, after the homeowners association won its case.

Chief Circuit Judge Edward Fine ruled Friday that the homeowners association could go forward with the foreclosure.

Attorney Barry Silver, who represents Andres, said he will ask Fine to delay the foreclosure order so the case can be appealed.

Peter Franceschina is a reporter for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, a Tribune Publishing newspaper.
