Mine looks the same. It can't be good for power.. actually I've been told they actually perform better full of fiberglass packing material vs. than without like what you have shown in the photo above. One question, why did you drill out the rivits on the Muzzys name plate?

I persoanlly have found the packing goes really fast in the MUZZY can. Your picture is pretty similar to what I have found after 2000 miles or less. And Bergie your comment is what I have been told by a number of experts as well.

I have 2 of the Muzzy Titanium oval cans. 1 pipe has been modified by removing the baffle and packing and replacing with a section of 2.25 I.D. exhaust pipe. Although I kind of like the sound (loud) I did Dyno test the modified can against the stock can and regardless of which maps I tried the end result was an 11 horsepower loss in peak horsepower with the modified can due to the loss in back pressure.

wow....thats insane carl!!!
Anyone have any idea of a better packing material to use besides whatever muzzy provides?
What do they use in regular car mufflers? Ive torn apart some pretty damn old mufflers and STILL found that packing in there.
Someone mentioned they use regular fiberglass insulation (like the pink panther shit)
I think perhaps ill try a variety of packing material...I have two pipes to play with (mine and mikes). I think Ill fill mikes with cocoa puffs first

My War story is that we packed the cans real loose to get through AMA Inspection on the noise meter, then went back and repacked then very tightly, but we all used woven mat fiberglass! A lot stronger and less prone to blow out!

I had pretty good success with a layer of super course steel wool (0 ought)
then the regular packing. The Steel wool acts like buffer to prevent the packing from being sucked up and burned. Fine steel wool will not work it just burns like the packing.

Ok..that just jarred somethin lose.
I was watchin a show the other day like that bob vila "this old house" kinda stuff...and they were using this insulation that looked like steel wool...I think he called it "mineral something". Man...that shit rocked....he basically put some in a bucket and dropped this insanely loud personal screamer device inside the bucket....couldnt even hear it. Anyone know what this stuff is? Would it stand the heat?

Gentlemen,
None of the muffler manufacturers use "fiberglass" or anything like household insulation. In particular, the packing we use has changed of over the last couple of years (the packing and the muffler shown looks to be about 2 years old). The packing we use is the same as is used in many OEM automotive applications. It is a high temperature ceramic material designed by a major world-wide supplier for just this type of application. You won't find anything better in general use "over the counter". Just take care of your muffler, remember dynoing and top speed passes will eat it up pretty fast and keep in mind that loose and loud is less, not more, power. As you know, we sell repack kits and also will rebuild and re-polish you mufflers if you send them to us for re-pack.

That is where I got mine! It sure took a lot longer time to burn up than anything I ever used! Around the core it was really charred, but white in the center and yellow at the shell!

If you send us the muffler, we rebuild it for 48.95 including packing but less any damaged, unusable parts, plus freight. We send you packing for $28.95 plus shipping if you want to do it yourself.
