Head Gasket Blowing Between Cylinders

I have a 2001 ZX12 with a SBM Billet 1317cc block that is blowing the head gasket (MLS Cometic ) between all the cylinders. The motor has the APE studs installed and I torque them to 65 ft. lbs. I know there are a few guys out there that have had this same problem. I am in need of some suggestions to fix this issue.

Is 65 foot pounds enough? I had that problem on my Toyota supra turbo. The fix was torqing head gasket 10 more pounds..

Have you resurfaced the head and block?

Supra - I was going by what was recommended by APE. I might try torquing them a little tighter but I don't want to go anymore than 80 ft. lbs.

Shane - I did not send them to a machine shop for resurfacing but I did lap the two of them together using a light valve grinding compound.

If you call Jim Gilnack at Competition CNC, he can help you with this.

They do resurfacing, and have some special lapping tools as well.

I talked to Jim at Competion CNC today and he says that the block probably needs to be resurfaced and getting it machined for Orings would be good to. I also talked with Superbike Mike, he said most of those blocks were machined for orings and he could get it done for me with about a two week turn around time. So do I just have it resurfaced or go ahead and get it machined for orings?

Some have run o`rings top and bottom...Head machined for o`rings too....You will find it hard to blow head gaskets with this setup....

o rings on either side of the gasket? uhhh....?

the setup I will be running with my billet Muzzy block is this: block machined for o rings, o rings installed in block, (annealed) copper HG with some sealer for the water/oil and reciever groove in the head (which doesnt have o rings!) the idea here is the wire deforms the copper and pushes it up into the groove in the head creating a mechanical lock.

not to scale but you get the idea

Pretty sure Dean had to do his ZRX nitrous or turbo motor like that...He kept blowing head gaskets even with just one side o-ring`d...

I decided to send the cylinder and head to Lee's Performance. The cylinder will be resurfaced and head will get oringed. He says he can have it done in two weeks which will leave me just enough time to get it all back together for race season.

aliveagain - I don't need another one. What did you do to finally get your headgasket to seal with the SBM block?

My problem was I was running around town with higher than stock compression and not keeping the rpm's up. On the street, I ride close to the speed limit and this would cause det. I didn't have a problem with it until the comp went up.

How much compression were you running?
I had some detonating issues on mine also. I was running 13.5 compression on mine. I am still going to run high compression but i will be using high octane race fuel only from now on.

I was around 14.8/1 I believe and that was running 93 octane.
