running rich

My 2000 model 12R has been a fine tool and no probs til last week. I've had her on the workbench in bits for 3/4 months as I have ther bikes to ride I was in no rush.
When I got her out again shes coughing & misfiring.Exhaust is sooty-sure sign of running rich. She did 85 miles to a tank of petrol that normally does 130!
I've changed the air filters (obvious first), but still not right-any ideas?

Exactly. The service bulletin was a result of my very own initial screw up and report to KMC. The grey plug goes on the manifold pressure sensor, the black one on the TPS. Only possible on 2000's.

Thanks for the help guys. Its not the plugs/air filters.
I'll have to get stuck in at weekend. I've had the tailpiece all off putting a undertray on, and the tank too. Its possible I've mis-connected something.
Mines a 2000 model (full power) plus a little.
Its just starting to get a bit brighter/drier/warmer here in the uk, good incentive to get these jobs done!Steve

Full power???
The new bikes have MORE power if anything (I've had a few on the dyno)...just limited at top-speed...

well another wet day in the uk-I've spent it in the garage working on my 12.Still have this rich problem. Warmed it up & redlined her to try & clear it, nothing, doublechecked the plugs, had new air filters.
I'm being to think it might be an enriching device on the injection system stuck. I'm working in thedark a bit now. Any more ideas anyone?
Are there any wiring diagrams for 12 on line anywhere?Steve

I was over a friends house once and noticed his father was having trouble with low power in their push lawnmower. (push 3 feet, wait for engine to rev up again)
In ten minutes the head was removed, and the small screw from the carburetor butterfly valve which had come loose and been sucked in and wedged into the exhaust valve seat (holding it open) was easily removed and put back where it belongs. (power increased from <1hp to 5hp)

I know this is a stretch as an example of possible problems, but its too bad you didn't do a compression test while you had those (pain in the butt) sparkplugs out.

Are you positive all cylinders are running?
maybe a ignition-stick is gone bad or starting to fail?
someone on the board a few months back had a stick go bad. (I am not sure if it was total failure or just misfiring)

Why was the 12 "on the workbench in bits for 3/4 months" in the first place?
What did you do to her?
This information may be helpful.

My Kawi mechanic buddy says its possible the altitude sensor is not plugged in, or failed.
This would result in the computer defaulting to its richest setting.
Although that may not be rich enough to account for your poor gas milage.

does it run bad at all speeds and throttle positions?
What color are the plugs?
Does it run differently when engine is cold or hot?
Does it feel like it is making full power?
Is there anything blocking the air passage?
Is the FI light indicating any problem?
How old is the fuel in the machine, It can degrade in as little as 2 weeks?
Answering these questions will make it easyer to help you with your problem.

misses throughout rev range
black sootish -all same so not an individual cylinder down.
runs bad hot or cold
doesnt make full power
nothing blocking air
f1 light not on
the (unleaded) fuel that was in during layup was minimal and used. plus 2 tanks of fresh plus a dose of stp injector cleaner.no change!

Are the coil sticks wired or working properly? Maybe you have bad or the wrong spark plugs in. What did you do to the motor ?

I admitted defeat and put my 12 into the local dealers. They have spent a full day plus the dyno trying to sort it. Theyve recovered all the steps I've done and doublechecked. Apparently its 30hp down as well. If they cant sort it in morning they are contacting Kawasaki Uk.
It will be interesting tosee what the answer is

Picked my 12 up tonight from Millenium in St Helens (my local Kwacker Dealer)
Had it on the dyno yesterday & it was 30 hp down.
Checked everything couldnt find anything wrong (except I run it on different plugs but it wasnt that.)

Discovered my aftermarket can was partly blocked. It had a patented rotor in it that is spun up by the exhaust gases. It was seized ( probably due to being laid up a few months) so was restricting the (otherwise) race can.
Put the standard can back on and did another dyno run -the missing 30bhp reappeared!
I rode it home and its definately better though its not ticking over well, but it improved slightly by the time I got home. The tuning guy said it might take a few miles for the fuel injection to adjuust itself to the changes. I'll report back when I 've a few more miles on the clock.
Thanks to everyone that offered advice on this. If its still rough I'll tell you!
Steve

The can is a slip on mby aguy in Burscough Southport,
With the law round here checking for race cans by sticking a stick or their truncheons down them (I joke not!) he designed a rotor type device thats mounted in the middle of the can. It spins & doesnt seem to affect the flow much but quietens it down slightly and gives plod the impression there is a baffle in there somewhere! Worked fine but must have rusted up during lay up. I've not had a chance to look at it properly yet.
I thought thecomputer could recalibrate itself to a certain extent -is that not right then? I'll put a few miles on her this weekend.-Steve

I'm just about to install a 2001 motor in my 2000 bike.If these connectors were changed in 2001 will they still connect to the 2001 motor. What other problems might i be facing?I could swap heads if it would make things easier to bolt up?

maybe your muffler impeller is seized again.
I just want to know how we were supposed to help figure out your problem when you didnt let us know you had crazy $hit like that on your bike.
Why don't you come clean and tell us about the marbles in the oil pan to help mix the oil while its running and the electric fan in the air intake to help ram the air in.

Unfortunately, I write my own scripts.

Did putting the standard can back on fix the problem again?

no! still (really)heavy on fuel-running very rich-not heard off kwacker dealer yet-think they thought the can was a get out clause-not a lot different. if they give up I'm onto Kawasaki UK-if I draw a blank there I'm going to drop the engine out myself &strip the fuel regulator down -its got to be something daft. Good job I've other bikes to ride or I'd be screaming by now.

well if you want something doing do it yourself!
My Kwacker dealers reckon it has to be Fuel Regulator. Cant buy a new one on its own, you have to buy the bank of injectors etc as well! £1300 english pounds plus VAT!.
Kawasaki Uk say it has happened a few times before on the 12 to their knowledge, but dont give a shit(impression I got).
I'm picking it up tomorrow and stripping it myself.Time will tell if it can be repaired or I'll hunt the scrap yards.
