Jim,.
Don't apologize for stating how you feel about this issue. We all have the right to voice our opinion, and you are actively doing something to protect that right. Thanks to you, and your brothers and sisters in arms, my family sleeps well at night and wake up as free citizens of the greatest country on earth.

quote: It is sad, that out of so many intelligent people, America's choice for president is a shotgun-riding, Texan redneck. I have always thought, that a president was supposed to represent a country in more or less in every way. I would like to think, that the image that Bush portrays is not anything like what America and Americans are about. This world is not about kicking ass or "smoking out" people as he puts it. This world is about communication and education which lead to a dialog, rather than firing six-shooters. It is sad, that brute power and low intelligence can gain such a wide acceptance in a country as wealthy and as powerful as the United States. God bless America!...For it really needs it with a Fuhrer on the rise...
"communication and education which lead to a dialog" can only go so far. If you cant see that after years of your suggested bullshit what has happened you need to pull your head out of your liberal arse.

hristo, I personally have respect for the willingly posting your views on these issues, KNOWING very well that it would be considered a "minority" viewpoint. I also agree with some and disagree with some of the other views shared here and on other threads concerning Iraq and our President (except anything Fish says about it, which I ALWAYS disagree with).
Having said that, I must also say that I adamantly disagree with both you and some of the others here. In your case, your comments appear to based on opinions, assumptions and interpretations of statements/news from limited sources. To assume, like Fish often does, that the majority of us obtain our information from only American newspapers and networks... is reckless folly.
In today's electronic age, obtaining news for world sources is relatively easy. In the Middle East, one can read the latest issue of the Bahrain Tribune and Gulf News or even view an English translation on some news items from Al-jazeera. In most cases, a large majority of the world's news outlets can be located at the World News Network's website. Even Baghdad.Com and the UN. NATO's website also posts daily news breifings. The content of these sites are more then amusing. When viewed seriously, the can be rather enlightening and educational.
Since none of these news organizations are run by a "supreme deity", I don't consider ANY of them as an absolute source of the "truth". That equally applies to the news offerings within this country. All they offer is a different perspective. Actually, I sometimes tend to agree with William Hurt's line in the movie, Alter States. The truth is... THERE IS NO TRUTH!. "Truth", by it's definition, should have a basis in "fact". The only problem is, those "facts" too often get blurred with opinion and emotion.
Utilizing these and other sources, I have developed some of my own "personal truths"....
1. The UN is not only irrelevant, it is a toothless dog barking on some old lady's front porch. It's failure to adequately acknowledge, much less address world issues and needs are both insulting and regressive. To have countries like Zimbabwe as a member of the UN Commission on Human Rights or to have China and Russia on UNEP is a slap in the world's face. The League of Nations PCIJ and later, the UN's ICJ is far more a threat the a blessing. It has already become a "revenge tool" of some of it's member nations in their attempts to deliver "world justice".
2. France and their "partners", Germany and Belgium, are bringing NATO to the point of irrelevance. Some believe it should have folded up their tent after the Cold War. Now, when NATO could have a real purpose (Balkans doesn't count) in the possible defense of Turkey from Iraq, the French minister suddenly forgets Article Four. DUH! Maybe the French current "success" in the Ivory Coast has clouded their ability to have a single rational thought.
3. The "issues" of Iraq are not oil (unless your the French with billions Euros in oil contracts) or "settling a score for Daddy Bush". After all, who was the most vocal about NOT going on and removing Saddam back then and what is that person's view on it now? A hint, his initials are "C.L.P.". When view in the light of what we would normally term as a "war", this excursion will hardly rate as a "conflict", just by it's duration alone. Do not confuse "occupation" with "war". They are not the same and I will not go into my views on that at this time.
The one aspect of the two fold purpose of this "conflict" is to prevent the further development as well as the "distribution" of globally banned weapons of mass destruction (mainly biological and chemical). The second, simply put, is a "regime change". The "militarily" and "global safety" reasons are glaringly obvious to even those of the most pacifist in belief. The "political' reasons take a distant "back seat" to the previous reasons and are also not worth debating at this point. That falls more under the "occupation" aspect. We're talking about "war" and the reasons for it, right now.
4. To consider North Korea's current actions to be more pressing and urgent then dealing with Iraq is exactly what Kim Jong Il would hope one would believe. With his declaration that sanctions against North Korea would be viewed as an "Act of war and aggression", how our we to feel about the UN current discussions of and the IAEA officials consideration of sanctions against North Korea? Is the UN trying to START a war? Hardly.
Kim Jong Il's "sabre rattling" is just that. It's all part of that "diplomatic song and dance" that the UN, the U.S. and most all other countries go through before coming to an "agreement" that "defuses" the whole situation. Though North Korea has a formidable military force, they do not have an economic structure in place to support such a force if it was to become an "active force". From a "Realpolitik" viewpoint, lobbing missiles over to Seoul (or even Oahu) would not bring Il what he wants or even allow him to remain in power.
He basically wants his "cake" (U.S. food and fuel oil) and "eat it" too. He will eventually capitulate, just as the U.S. will, when Il decides to "make nice" and let the IAEA inspectors back in. After all, those same inspectors had been there for years and never had a clue that the were resuming nuclear weapon development. Regular "Columbos", those inspectors.
5. That brings me back to the current UN inspectors in Iraq. Their duties do NOT include "finding" anything. It's Iraq's obligations under 1441 and the numerous other resolutions to "present" and "completely disclose" ALL weapons information to these inspectors. Not the U.S. or any other nation, by any means, should be required to release intelligence information, to help Iraq "prove" they are meeting the requirements of these resolutions. On the other hand, the U.S. or any other country CAN release "limited" intelligence information to "prove" that Iraq has NOT met the requirements. For one to say that issues like the Al Samoud missile exceeds the agreed upon range by "15 kilometers" or so is "no big deal" is nothing but the dreaming of a political Lilliputians.
I no longer have the desire to live a life of "would have, could have, should have". To sit around and wait for the proverbial "smoking gun", mean that someone else is already dead. For those like HDL and beanbaxter that are currently following the wishes of our "Cowboy" leader, all I have to say is YIPEE-YI-YEA.... MOTHER FUCKER!*
