Italy raises speed limits for safer motorways
10 Feb 2003
Speed limits are being raised in Italy to improve road safety.
Italian transport minister Pietro Lunardi believes higher speeds will improve the traffic flow, and encourage motorists to pay attention. The change will affect three-lane motorways, with the limit raising to 150km/h (93mph), from January 1, 2004. Lunardi went on to say that psychologists and doctors say people who go faster drive better and are more careful, and that only 9 per cent of fatal accidents were caused by speeding.
The decision has been praised by the Assocation of British Drivers. ABD spokesman Nigel Humphries was " ecstatic. It seems common sense is percolating through the road safety establishment in Italy. " He feels a similar speed would be sensible for UK motorways, where " no-one would be stopped for less than 100mph. "

Those Italians are so dang Smart!!!! (Im a 1/4 Italian). wish some of them over here in the states could make those kinds of offers the goverments couldent refuse.......

Here in the US, we consider ourselves on the cutting edge, but Europe has been miles ahead of us w/their speed limits or lack thereof for years. In the US, it's all about money, control, and BS, and nobody gives a rip about what makes sense! Remember when the freeway speeds were reduced from 70 to 55 ? Like I said, it's all BS.
Just my opinion.
PS, I thought the Italian was a Stallion?

Not that anyone is on the subject any more...lol, but the driving is very different overseas, take Germany. They are held responsible for their actions. They are much more serious about insurance, licenses, faulty equipment. Not that we don't have the ability to drive,we can drive, we haven't learned consiquences for our actions. They have rules, driving edicate, if you will. If there is a wreck on the side of the road and you DO NOT stop to help...you can be ticketed. Here in the states everyone is worried about being sued if they stop. If you don't have insurance you are being towed and taken to the police station. No questions, no Mr. Nice Guy, you are going. You know how when you have to merge and people rush to the front to try and squeeze in before everyone else stopping the flow of traffic? ...well, they have the two lanes merging and stay in their lane until you get to the front where you need to merge and EVERY car, lets one car merge and it is called a zipper effect. It makes for smooth traffic. The traffic doesn't stop while all the rude fucking people move to the front to get somewhere just a bit faster. If you don't let someone in you can be ticketed. And as for all you speed demons...they have cameras where there is NOT unlimited speeds and you can't fight them. If it is YOUR bike, it is YOUR ticket....unless your buddy comes foreward and takes the fall. You are responsible for your property. Oh and they aren't punks...when I walked off the plane in Germany for the first time the police officer was carrying a machine gun. I love it here, in the USA, Germany was a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. We could however take some lessons about punishment fitting the crime committed. That is MY opinion and no one has to agree.
