s10, 4.3 with offroad package 4wd

runs good, 74k on the clocks, 4yrs old

towed 5000 pounds of crap in trailer during move, no complaints

i use the 4wd pretty often, when roads are wet or at home putting hay out for the critter. amazing how much you can get away with on wet road in 4-hi

(or deal's gap in 4-hi...heh heh heh. poor tires...poor engine......poor brakes..... when i stopped at overlook you could smell tires, brakes, and clutch, in that order. hehe noone caught up to me either....(no bikes on the road, was march)

Stock against stock? Sure, I'll compare. First, let's take the stats on a "stock" GM 502 crate motor.

GM ZZ 502/502 Crate Motor - PN12371171
502 Horsepower / 567 Ft. Lbs. of Torque
(9.6:1 compression ratio)

Hmmmmmm... pretty impressive. Ah, but just like our beloved ZX-12R can compare to the larger displacement of the Busa, Mopar's answer to the 502 (30 c.i. smaller)....

Mopar 472 Hemi Crate Motor - PN5249666
525 Horsepower / 560 Ft. Lbs. of Torque
(9:1 compression ratio)

Ah... so you want to whip out the 572, eh?

GM ZZ 572/620 Crate Motor - PN (N/A at this time)
620 Horsepower / 650 Ft. Lbs. of Torque
(9.6:1 Compression Ratio)

So what's Mopar's reply? How about 44 c.i. smaller?

Mopar 528 Hemi Crate Motor - PN5007630
610 Horsepower 650 Ft. Lbs. of Torque
(10.25:1 compression ratio)

Okay. so it's 10 HP short of the 572/620. It's also 108 HP / 83 Ft. Lbs. above the 502 and does it with a mere additional 26 c.i. too. Now with a compression ration of 10.25:1, "streetability" starts to come in to play. Still, Mopar claims that... "The 10.25:1 compression ratio with aluminum heads allows the use of current high octane (premium) pump gas.'.

Of course, if that wasn't a factor, GM would take the whole enchilada with this baby...

GM ZZ 572/720R Crate Motor - PN (N/A at this time)
720 Horsepower / 685 Ft. Lbs. of Torque
(12:1 Compression Ratio w/race fuel)

Now coming back to "reality" and what would really work on the street as a "daily driver", we're talking about the 502 versus 472 Hemi or the 572/620 versus the 528 Hemi. "Stock" versus "Stock", the bow-tie folks need to keep working on it. Also, like our bikes, NO ONE leave it "stock"....

...well, you get the point, eh? How's that for stirrin' up the shit?

The motor I am refering to is a stock production motor, available in any 3/4 to 1 ton Chevy truck.

Ya got me on the 1/2 ton availability though. I would say your truck wins the 1/2 ton power wars. (excluding the Lighting of course)

lightning isnt even in the same ballpark when it comes to price. For the 15k difference in price...i could easily make up that 35hp power gap

for a "work its ass off truck" Ford is it in the F 250 on up catagory. just last week we pulled a 24,000 lb load in my buddies new dodge diesel, It could not handle the load as well as my 1995 F350 diesel in all areas. Thats just one little real world account. Almost every contractor who makes his living with his truck is driving a Ford in these parts.

it should come with a lot of stuff....unfortunately they dont.......you dont get a lot of extra goodies now for 30k. When I bought my truck in 97, it came loaded out for 27k, and I actually only gave 23k...half ton loaded 2 wheel drive....now ooking at a ford extended cab 4x4 with the new diesel motor....43k.....i dont see it....not for me, I will put a little money in to the 98 chev and drive it for another 120k miles

Lets hook up 20,000 pounds and race to the top of the hill. And what's even cooler about my cummins is with it loaded it will pull better mileage than the gas engine trucks get coasting down hill!!

If you want a truck buy a truck. If you ant a car buy a car.

My 99 Dodge 1 ton with a Cummins is slightly modified. The intake has been changes, the down pipe and exhaust changed, the injectors changed, the waste gate changed and a dyno source chip has been installed. On 4 different occasions, and on three different dynos, She has dynoed at over 550 rear wheel horsepower. And just under 1400 foot pounds of torque.

She is king of the hill. I have big block chevy, ford and dodge trucks. They are cool work ok, get 6 to 12 miles to the gallon. My Cummins pumped gets 10 under a huge load pulling the mountains etc. But usually she get 14 to 20. So if you are looking for a truck to kick ass the Cummins works. And I might add she will get a speeding ticket in excess of a 120!

I do like the quiet Dura Max Chevy has now. But the 2003 Cummins is very quite as well. My complaint for Dodge is they need a better automatic that will hold up under the power! But I have to say with the mods, Dodge replaced my automatic three times in 100,000 miles!

Here is a fair comparison,
Chevy SS:
364 CI
345 horsepower @ 5200
380 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpm

5.7L Hemi
345 horsepower @ 5400 rpm
375 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4200 rpm

And the Chevy doesn't have to have 2 plugs per cyl so it will idle properly.

They are taking orders and building them, at least that is the impression I got when I asked about it and they asked if I wanted to order one and if I did they would give me a delivery date. I am not wild about the new styling and the dark charcoal interior color or I would have ordered it and leased it. May as well keep the payments down and get something new every few years.
Anyway all the new GM truck motors are LS1 based.

I would love to see Chevy and Ford bring back the days of the ElCamino and Ranchero. Big Block motors, comfort and capable of hauling a piece of plywood once and awhile!
