help finding insurance

The insurance renewal just came in again. In 3 years my ZX12R w/full/everything coverage has gone from $650yr. to $1400+ a year w/a clean driving record.

Many companies have dropped it (ZX12R) from their coverage lineup altogether (as in "we don't cover that bike cuz of it's high claim rate." Or, "we don't write coverage on that bike cuz of it's top speed ability.")

I've tried quotes from Progressive, Geico, USAA, Bike-Line, State Farm, Farmers, & others (AAA/Allstate don't do it here-NoCA.), & no luck so far. I really don't want to pay over a grand a year, I think it's silly to have to pay that much with my clean record. I haven't made a claim to anyone since 1977', 25+ years...

Anyone steer me to someone who doesn't have their head up their ass on this bike?

Thanks!

Dave

State Farm. You must insure one of your automobiles to get a motorcycle policy. I pay about $498.00 yearly. Full coverage, 100/300/100 (which is extreamly high) $500.00 deductable. If you don't have any luck.........consider dropping the medical coverage off your policy if you have good medical insuance through your work. Only one or the other is going to pay anyway. It will reduce you premium by quite a bit. You can keep passenger coverage if you haul passengers.

Just got a letter from Cycle-Direct(aka Empire). stating "We will no longer be insuring motorcycles. As of 4/03 your coverage will expire." I was paying just over $1100 yr for my 12R, ZRX and wifey's SV650S. Gonna be hard to beat that. Isn't McGraw a good one for Cali? Not available here. Lemme know what you find.

EastBayDave.............just what was State Farm's response? I also have a clean driving record and find it hard to believe that they wouldn't pick you up in a hurry. You sound very insurable to me, AND my State Farm agent. I am 47 years old, no tickets, dui's (I don't drink )or accidents. We must be in about the same catagory for risk. McGraw,Dairyland,Progressive,Gieco and others didn't even come close when I went rate shoping. As I said above......State Farm requires at least one automobile be insured with them in order to issue a motorcycle policy. Also....if you have good medical insurance through work, get quotes without it on the bike policy. Hell, you can even get a quote without it on your automobiles, keeping passenger liability of course. It makes a big difference in policy rates.

I guess they won't be calling themselves "Cycle Direct" anymore. It is a conspiracy against motorcyclists enabled by collusion in the casualty insurance industry.

I'm glad you scored on your insurance, Dave. However, it is more than a little disconcerting that insurers are dropping certain models of bikes, if not bikes altogether.

I hope that this trend doesn't continue, but I fear that it will. *sigh*

well, altho its gettin old by now, i feel i need to mentioned the BC insurance situation to make u all feel better. including comprehensive (theft etc) & collision, with full discount, about $2100CDN insured for $10,000CDN. Insured for a more ralistic $15,000 (especially if i want to include helmet & leathers etc in the cost), it would be over $3,000 a year, or about $2,000US. and thats with MAX discount, which is about 45%.

having said, that, i'm kinda curious as to how ur setup works. the 100/300/100, what does that stand for? i assume thousands of dollars in liability under 3 different situations? most people here go for 1 or 2million liability, which will noarmally cost u a couple hundred bucks a year. base is $200,000. ALOT of people also get 4M or more, jsut cause if u end up runnin someone over bein an idiot or whatnot, u'r gonna need more than $200,000. collision always covers the replacement value of the vehicle. technically, i dont know if u need collision coverage unless u'r at fualt. i assume the other person's liability ays for ur car if its their fault. the medical side of things isnt an issue in canada of course. insurance has nothing to do with that far as i know. medical coverage is more or less free here. well, if u dont make much that is. a person making over ... i think its about $35,000 a year pays full medicare fees, which is about $54 a month for a single person. nto that that covers the cost of the program. it's all govt funded so it comes out of ur taxes more than anything. as to deductible, u used to be able to pay more to get it reduced, but they just recently went to a new system with a flat deductile of... $1000 i think? kinda high really. standard was $300 before i believe.

anyway, someone wanna explain how the 100/300/100 thing works?

I am not an insurance expert......thats for sure ......but here goes. 100/....is bodily injury. 300/....is the liability limit. 100/......is for property damage. We were talking motorcycles here, so 100,000 is quite alot for propery damage with a motorcycle. Doubtful to do 100,000 worth of damage to someone's car with a bike.

Maybe someone on here is an insurance agent and can explain more.
