520 Chain
Looking at this setup from a local dealer.... does it look like the right way to go?
By the way my OEM chain is really toasted.
His email to me:
We don't sell the OEM one with the cushion. Our vendors (Vortex, Sprocket
Specialists, AFAM) don't make the OEM replacement style since that's mostly
a sound-deadening thing and the aftermarket makers are focused on
performance.
So I'll be happy to sell you a 520 conversion kit with performance
sprockets, but there will certainly be a perceptible increase in noise
level.
You will need to go with the DID 520ERV2 chain to get the higher tensile
strength for the ZX12R. So your total would be $114 for the chain and then
you have a choice in sprockets.
The 17/46 combo from Sprocket Specialists is $61.98 (SS Series rear, steel
front)
The 17/46 combo from Vortex is $69.98 with alloy rear and steel front.
Both the sprocket sets are discounted off retail for you. I don't stock
either for ZX12R so I will have approx. 4-5 business day turnaround for SS
or 6-9 working days for Vortex, then 1 day to your location in SoCal from
me.
Best Regards,

Why is your chain toasted? How many miles?
You can go to the 520 and you may save a pound or 2 in weight. My concern is the tensile strength of that chain. As long as its 9000lbs or more you should be ok. I think the DID ZVMX is a stock replacement.
Prices sound ok. THe ZX11 countershaft is $17 or so.

I run a 520 chain and sprocket set-up. No problems. DID chain with Sprocket Specialties sprockets. Steel in front and the Titan Tuff treated aluminum rear sprocket.

We had a 1000 suzuki with the 520 set up, he latches at 8000-8500 and it took 60 passes before the chain broke.

i am converting to 520 setup right now. sprocket specialist charge extra for the shaving of the contershaft and rear sprocket. they don't consider these as normaly 520 conversion. i have an ext arm and had to buy 2 chains they only come in 120 links in a box. i will only use a small length of the socound one. i will sell anyone the extra to save you from buying 2 like i did. this is the 520erv2 gold chain that is the strongest one available . don't forget extra master links they only come with braded connectors. those chains list for around $150 . ican get them for you if you want.

Have about 22,000 miles on the chain...I do ALOT of mountain twisties first, second gear red line and on occasion a drag strip or two. Clean the chain every hundred miles with diesel and lube with the best bel ray.
Chain has developed a tight area that when correctly adjusted makes the rest of the chain to loose.
