Interesting perspective

British racer John Surtees, the only man to win Formula One championships on bikes and in cars, put it best: You come close to the unity of man and bike "in a Grand Prix car [at speed] in the rain. Only then was there the same sensitivity, the softness of controls. But even Grand Prix cars lack that delicate flow of messages a bike's always relaying, and you feel removed from the machine by contrast."

I spotted this on another (Labusa)site. It caught me by suprise. I knew that Surtees had been a successful Formula One driver, but did not know of his success in motorcycles. What do you think the chance of this ever happening again? It seems like a remarkable accomplishment.

I don't know if anyone will ever be able to make the transition these days. Both sports now require total dedication from the earliest age.

I agree with the membership body.

However, never is a long time. It isn't inconceivable that it could happen at some time in the future.

You'd certainly have to figure that a supremely talented MotoGP racer would have their career shortened by some means, and then move to the autos. It's a long shot for certain, but not impossible.

*wonders how to land a job in MotoGP--sighs* :P

I met John Surtees when I was a car (F-5000) mechanic. He was a team/car owner then. When he found out bikes were my "hobby" that's all he wanted to talk about. VERY cool dude.

I have read somethings on Rossi where some of the Formula I folks have apparently had some thoughts and discussion about Rossi. But Rossi apparently doesn't like Formula I. He thinks the venue isn't all that hot for the fans and it lacks passion. Something like that anyway. So he has no intentions of racing Formula I. It would take a youngster world champ like Rossi to move to Formula I and then years of driving!

It was cool seeing you on Speed, Doug! Kinda eerie listening to Rob give the tour, as I had just gotten it from him a few weeks before watching the show. Any chance Rob would part with Chandler's '99 Superbike?

what's ur experience with racers, other team members (mechanics, pit crew), and team owners doug? do they tend to be happy people who realize they'r doing what they dreamed of? are they so stressed from the competition that they turn all sour? or does their elite position within their respective worlds (especailyl the owners) get to them & turn them all into prima donnas? or is it purely an individual thing, with no general trend? have i fit enough questions into a paragraph? or would you like a few more?

We have two of the '99 Superbikes. The one Doug won the Championship with can be yours for $30,000, The backup bike (which is essentially the same, just not THE bike) is less.
Doug

FrEEk,
I can't generalize on that. There are good ones and bad ones just like in any occupation. One thing that is always present, though, is respect for perfection and dedication.
