Newb to zx12r.. Sprocket.. gearing
I'm the new owner of a '00 zx12r and it's time for a newchain... I am thinking about going -1 on the front to compensate for the 302 lbs it has to carry around.. Don't get me wrong, I have no complaints really with the stock setup but it seems sprockets are easier to change than my weight :-)
What's a good setup and what difference might I feel with a -1, +1 setup? Too drastic? Or do I just go -1 in front?
Feel free to tell what setup u are running and the difference u felt from stock!!! I AM LOOKING FOR YOUR OPINION'S!!!!
Thanks in addvance for all input

-1 would be a good place to start, sprockets are less than $30 for the front. Good for about 183 mph.
1 tooth on the front is about 2.5 teeth on the back so if you want to go -1 and +1 you can do that too.
There is no exact perfect gearing, you'll hear tons of recommendations but I'd start with -1.
I think you'll end up with -1 +1 or -1 + 2 because of your weight.

not really worried about who's able to pass me once we reach 170-180 mph..
just lookin for a little more pep in the lower rpms WITHOUT flippin the bike at WOT..
i've never really been one to clutch-up to do a wheelie BUT pre-loading the suspension in second gear, off throttle then hard back on the throttle(up she comes) every once in a while would be nice i guess.
I AM LOOKING FOR OPINIONS ON WHAT SPROCKETS EVERYONE IS RUNNING AND HOW YOUR ZX12 HANDLES THE GEARING DIFFERENCE..
if there is already a thread describing this please direct me thanks

At 240 lbs I ran -1 on the street and strip, It was a decent improvement....completely manageable power characteristics. I later switched to -1,+1.
I wouldn't hesitate to run -1, +1 in your case. In fact, I am running that gearing now with a 1287, and it is compeletely controllable.
I ran a Vortex countershaft sprocket, and an AFAM alloy rear sprocket for many miles with good results. For durability, you can't beat a steel rear sprocket...and you can pick up a good one from many sources. Dennis Kirk carries Sunstar, which is a good product and reasonably priced. They also usually have them on hand for immediate shipment.
