zxrcy, i certainly agree with the spirit of what u say. as i mentioned, i stopped buying collision after the first year. unfortunately for me, i wrote off the bike year after (this past sept), but i dont mind cause the crash was my fault & my fault alone, so i really dont see why anyone else shoudl pay for it. i can see collision insurance when it's ur primary mode of transportation but i didnt NEED the bike. dont use any vehical for work, and shopping can always be done by foot or by bus. it is truly a recreational vehicle for me, so i dont really see the purpose in collision coverage. theft coverage is another thing entirely of course, yet i resnet having to pay theft even more than collision, jsut cause i shouldnt HAVE to pay theft in the first place, meaning shit shoudlnt get stolen (yeah, its an obvious statement i know, but i think its kinda fundamental). just pisses me off in a big way.
as to the comments about insurance premiums & how u pay back what u claimed, thats gonna happen one way or another. if it didn't the insurance co's wouldnt be profitable, and then noone would do it. the only problem now is people who DONT have claims obviously pay part of the bill for those that DO. in that sense, i like the added premiums till u pay it off scenario. course, it would prolyl make more sense to bank at least half the value of ur vehicle to begin with, then u could drop the rates to maintainance levels till u have a claim, tehn pay the other half in premiums (for collision only of course). this way u dont get hit up as hard after a crash, but u dont have enough $$ sitting there to buy a new one anyway. in the end, the only thing that truly makes sense imho is no collision coverage at all. u cause an accident, u pay for it. plain and simple. obviously medical is another barrel of monkeys, and unfortunately prolly a bigger one, and one that cant be written off as easily. as usual, there are no good answers.

full coverage everything+ on my 00' went from $700 to $1100 in Dec. I've been insured with these guys since 1978'; & I've only made 1 no-fault claim w/them- in 1978'. Since then pretty much clean record...
I called & the reason for the increase? "We put a surcharge on sportbikes now due to the vast numbers of claims we have on them." - "We also put a little extra on this bike cuz 93% have a claim in the first year."
The fact I've never made a claim on this bike, have no tickets, & not made a claim in 25 years didn't matter an i-ota. It they were not the cheapest game in town for my extra coverage, I'd be elsewhere. No one else is cheaper in this area (SF Bay.) I'm being reamed too...sux the cosmic wab.

We could write or petition our elected representatives, but alas, they are in the back pocket of the insurance industry lobbyists. I use Liberty Mutual because Allstate tried to triple my premiums. I also switched my wife's van insurance and our house insurance to Liberty Mutual from Allstate and the agent saved me a few bucks there also.
I believe the insurance industry participates in collusion because of the claims data they submit to third party databases and they all subscribe to these databases to check various claim data. It wouldn't be too bad except that the data can identify individual claims made by people. For example you try to get a policy from company X and they query this database and find out that you had claims with company Y thus affecting your ability to get insurance or affecting your premiums. Do a Google search on "CLUE database" and read up on it.

Insurance companies calculate rates according to a pool of riders. How they determine who's in the pool varies, but your driving record or previous claims have little to do with it. How they can maximize profits is the driver.
Revolt? The time for that would have been before insurance became mandatory. Now any attempt would have the same chance as campaign finance reform.
Face it, they aren't making any money insuring these bikes. Fraudulent claims, ease of theft, and the fact that the very nature of these bikes makes them uncrashworthy are all causes. Airplanes, helicopters, and bikes just don't crash well. Can you even picture a bike which could pass the types of crash tests they subject cars to, and if one could be made, would you want it?
These are the twilight years of high-performance road bikes. That's why I bought 2 2000 12's - I'm 42 now, and I figure they'll last me till I'm 50, and maybe I'll be ready for a Harley then. Enjoy them while you can, before legislation and uninsurability bring this party to an end.

...yeah but I'm almost sure that there is a significant number of responsible and mature big-bore sportbike riders out there who deserve a premium break, don't you?...we'd be low-impact on the insurance industry's profit margine if they're charging the vast number of 'claimers' through the nose anyway, right?...let them charge the high-risk riders accordingly and charge the low-risk riders accordingly no matter what type of bike we each choose to ride....

I also Use State Farm and Live "IN" Washington DC (A lot of people say they live here and really live in Northern Virginia or the Maryland Suburbs). I pay about $400 a year for the 12.
Dave in Daytona said it best. With State Farm, it is the Agent that makes "ALL" Of the difference, and I have a Great Agent. I have friends (a few) that also have State Farm and saved several hundred a year on just going to my agent!
