OT---Tribute to K9
..for all of you who cherish your four legged family members, go give him/her a loving pat on the head in honor of San Diego Sheriff's K9 "Urk"...
...K9 "Urk" was KIA on 01/18/03 0230hrs when a suspect opened fire with a shotgun at his Deputy and the patrol car...the Deputy was not hit, a Sheriff's Explorer was shot on his elbow, and a running gun battle ensued...
...as we have often trained for scenerios like this, the Deputy hit his remote control for the 'door popper' as he shot back at the suspect, the device opened K9 "Urk's" rear door so that he could go after the suspect...although mortally wounded, K9 "Urk" had the courage and the will to fight and go after the suspect...he tried, but could only manage a few valiant, furious steps before he succumbed to his wounds...the Deputy didn't realize his K9 partner had been shot until he called out for him with no response, only to find him dying near the car...
...the Explorer suffered major damage to his elbow, the suspect is still at-large..he's been known to visit my beat area...I need to find this badguy...
...K9 "Urk" was a large and swift German Shepard dog...during our weekly trainings, he'd always launch himself about two of his body length thru the air on a fleeing 'suspect'...it was beautiful to watch this five and a half year-old 115lb missle fly, and you wondered if he was going to miss his target with all that speed and momentum, only to see his massive head turn slightly at the very last second as he attached himself to a 'suspect's' shoulder...try catching a hi-speed 115lb manhole cover...impossible...he always took the man to the ground...
...K9 "Urk" bit so hard, he was so determined, he'd put bruises on me and other handlers thru the training bite-suits and sleeves...at times (depending on my stamina that day) I insisted on wearing a safety helmet to protect my head at training because I hated being on the ground with him fighting on top of me...
...there are punctures and missing pieces on/from his metal container in his patrol car...the results of his tenacious and comical attempts to make an unauthorized deployment from the car...he was like a hairy can-opener  ...he worked as he trained, as many suspects who refused to comply painfully discovered...a linebacker warrior of a dog...K9 "Urk" was his Deputy's most important and loyal beat partner for the past four years...and the Deputy's best buddy...they and my partner, K9 "Uoschi", went thru the same K9 academy, and hit the streets as certified K9 Teams on the same day...
...K9 "Urk", this is for you and your Deputy, buddy...I will miss you and your beautiful'smile'  ...may all your times be playtimes from now on...go take a break, buddy..."GUT HUND!!!"

You know Worm, being a guy that use to train Schutzhund, and other working dogs, I knwo what kind of relationship you can build with them. My old buddy was far more than a working dog, he was jst that, my buddy. I am no Police officer, or in law enforcement in any way, for me it is strictly a hobby, the training that is. I feel very badly for the handler.
My thought and prayers are with them both....makes me a little more forgiving when my buddy wants to eat one of my socks because I wont take him out and play...

That was a nice salute Worm. Although I am not a trooper or office, I believe that K9 officers are some of the hardest working and loyal members of any police force. This view has been reinforced from seeing how the K9 officers assisted (untill they were almost colapsing from exhaustion and had bloody paws) at the 9/11 disaster - and from watching them train to become officers. They are amazing officers, and their passing is always tragic. Please accept my appology if my terminology is incorrect, or offending (When I call the K9's "officers), but I have a high degree of respect for the K9's AND their human partners. My thoughts and prayers are with them both as well.

...UPDATE: Suspect in custody 01/19/03 0230hrs...24hrs...went smooth...wepaons siezed...no more injuries or death from this suspect...
..."officer" or "deputy" is an acceptable title for the K9 by citizens if they chose, us K9 handlers call them "partners"...thanks, we appreciate it...

I have worked with various department's K-9 units (decals for their cars, etc.) and have had a long standing respect for the most courageous of law enforcement officers (the dogs). Like deathpulse, I was impressed (but not surprised) of the valiant efforts of those dogs during OKC and WTC.
I saw the special on the K-9s used in Viet Nam and cried for those that were lost in combat and especially for those that were left behind. Pushing those Hueys off the side of an aircraft carrier is one thing, but leaving those dogs behind as if they were "hardware", while their handlers were BS'ed about how they would be shipping their dogs back was just wrong.

Hard to beat the companionship, loyalty and friendship of a dog. I lost my 14 old big male Dobe named Satan, 11 months ago and the old heart still has a big void. And I am now at this moment watching my 10 year female named Angel moving quickly toward death due complications with her liver. Luckily we have a 16 week old Rhodesian puppy to help fill the void.

I'm a big dog lover, especially German Shepards. My white shepard now watches out for my kids since I can't be there. I hate to hear about something like this hapening to a great dog.
