take off the rear seat. take off the front seat. take off the "ashtray," take off the four bolts in the front and sides of the tank, take off the two bolts in the bake, remove tank cover. on the right side of the frame is a metal plate with 6 screws, remove this plate to access the battery tray, undo the plugs and the big ass power lead. pull out battery tray part way. curse in frustration, remove battery tray most of the way and get it stuck again. curse some more, kick the bike. yank it really hard injuring your shoulder in the process. undo leads and rubber strap, remove battery. lube up the sides and bottom before putting in (this advice has various applications) so it comes out easier next time.

If you need a manual give me a shout, my copy is 2002 onwards but should cover a lot of your bike.
Good luck with the battery they are a bit tight to say the least, whilst your in there get some Optimate leads fitted.

A dumb question is the one not asked. I went to a motorcycle tech. school and there was a class specializing in kawasaki. They need to find where the battery was on the 12. They looked for it for about an hour and some how another someone found out I was the only one in the school who own a 12 so they ask me and I helped. I never saw a bike tore down so much looking for a battery.
