weak spark

I am still fighting this issue of plugs fouling fairly quickly for the past 3 years.Just so I can eliminate certain places to check, does the kickstand cutout switch or ignition on off switch have anything to do with the signal to the coils?More specifically, if there is corrosion or a weakening connection, does that effect the ECU enough to alter the signal to the coils?

Essentially it shouldn't.

Have you checked the coils throughly? I mean with a multimeter by checking the end points? Also have you checked the mixture/power commander.Mine needed a full firmware reset as it had gone simply bonkers.Fouled the sparkplugs too and then later the bike simply refused to start.

The secondary part of the coil is fine. I got a reading of 1.6ohms on the primary side.My brother says they see that so frequently that he no longer pays attention to it. I want to get my hands on an analog meter to see if the reading is different. Like I said, if I can rule out other sources like a corroded crimp that wouldn't affect the spark then I can more easily confine the spots to check. And no, to the best of my knowledge I don't have a bad crimp but was using this as an example. I really want to be able to check the voltage to the coils but don't have that capability.

It would be highly unlikely for more than 1 coil to go bad at one time,if you are fouling spark plugs why would you suspect the coils?

I think it maybe something other then the coils. Although my primary coils have a resistance of 1.6ohms and is out of spec, I think there is another reason that caused the higher resistance in the coils. I don't have a way to check the voltage to the coils which could effect the amperage and lifespan of the coils. Those coils are all the same age so they would break down fairly similarly although not open circuit the same time. This is why I ask if the signal from the key, on/off/, kickstand switch could effect the output from the ECU to the coils.

Hi there,

What sort of mpg are you getting, riding hard, riding steady etc, are the filters clean.

Have you got a Power Commander ??

The reason I ask is, I have a of Yamaha YZ490 J 1982, and I bought another that was road legal, but the motor was not good, so I took the motor out of my original bike, and fitted it into the road legal one, sorted, so I thought.

It kept eating spark plugs, and the mpg was about 40 miles to the tank ( 10 ltr ) ???

I changed the carb to the one from my original bike, and all was good, spark plug never fouled and the mpg went up to 70 miles to the tank.

I'm not saying your 12 would be like this 'cause it's fuel injected, but something to eliminate.

Thanx Dave.

Meaning, if the fuelling is miles out,( too rich ), it could be fouling your spark plugs!!

I thought about fueling but we pulled the plugs and grounded them out while turning the engine over.Very weak spark.

Where I stand now is waiting for a leak down tester. Christmas will be tight this year and so I won't be buying bike tools before then. We did take the boots off the coils and cleaned them out with a wire brush that comes in a spark plug tool. My brother saw evidence of where it was arcing so we cleaned them all up. they had become oxidized inside and we're just trying to eliminate things as we go along. I had them tested on another gauge and the reading was lower but not in range still. I have to get some kind of adapter so I can measure peak voltage on the coils and the crank sensor. This whole process has been very frustrating but informative.

the ecu directly controles the coils ground wires just like the grounds for the injectors.
with all the plugs out of the bike get a leather glove or something to not get hit by the spark and put a phillups driver in the plug cap and turn over the bike and slowly pull the driver away from the valve cover and see how far the spark will jump all the time. if it is 1/8" game over and week spark. if it goes 1/2" then maybe you need to get your bike sniffed on a dyno that can load the rear tire and look at the fueling in driving conditions.
