Powder Coat "Bergie"??

Bergie, you suggest to powder Coat. Are you saying that I cannot scratch the parts? How much for the Swingarm?

My last plan is to paint it with a color close to Aluminum! Then the scratches will not be noticed! You or someone tell me!

Where around DC can I get this done. I must put the arm on Monday or who knows when the weather will be better?

If you decide to powdercoat now then you have to replace all bearings and its not a fun job.

powder coat

Vince,

I didn't get the full conversation but there is a place right here in Laurel that does Powder Coating. His work isn't too bad. I'll get the info for you.

Vince, paint it to match. THe color on the frame is easy to match and touch up would be a breeze. Usually Im all for powdercoating, but with swingarms and fork legs..its easier to paint and touch up.

Cowboy you answered my question! TB, you helped . I bought Aluminum paint and am looking for Platinum paint. When (not if) I scratch it, I do not want it to look like a black car that has a lot of Dings and waxed, then all of the dings turn white! I wondered how to protect the Bearings and I know that even with a press, "Replacing" without damage is Hell!

The paint is Duplicolor. The low gloss black matches the frame perfectly.
$5/can. Available everywhere
Just clean the swingarm with alcohol and spray light coats. No need to prime with the paint. Finish is really tough too. I nicked an arm I was painting and with some light sanding you couldnt tell it even had one.

Vince, IIRC you have family in Manassas, there is a shop where I get all my powdercoating done: ASCo (American Stripping Co.) 9205 Vassau Court Manassas Park VA 20111 (703) 368-9922 or Metro (703) 631-0572. They are open from 7:30am to 5:00pm. They do every color and finish imaginable. I've had wheels done for my car as well as suspension components and even an intake manifold. If I were to guess on the cost for a swingarm, $60 to $80. For reference when I had my 17x11 aluminum ZR1 wheels done it was $100 per wheel, when I had lower control arms done it was only $30 per LCA. Two LCAs are about the same size as one ZX12R swingarm..

The upside is it won't scratch off. Powdercoating is pretty sturdy stuff you can whack it with tools and it wont chip. The downside is that it's expensive (see my previous message) and also turnaround from ASCo. is about 3 to 5 days and they aren't open late; they close at 5pm.

Bergie, I had no doubts that ou knew a place. When I have Down time to replace bearings, I will do this. Voz, The only place I can Imagine getting paint that will hold up is Eastwood Company in PA. They have a High Pigment paint I used on the Porsche Wheels. it is a dark Gray Black They have real Black and other colors. My problem is that I want to match the sort of Platinum / Champane color of the original! I know I will not like the durability of the paint! TB, most High Heat paints usually need the heat to cure and are not fuel proof until they have cured!

Just got my swingarm, rear footpegs and brackets powdercoated to match the frame with excellent results. He charged $100 for everything but it is a slight pain having to replace all the bearings.....just make sure all the threads have bolts in them and REALLY clean all the sand out from the blasting process.

They can also do a chemical strip instead of a blast; I had them do this on my wheels as I was worried the blasting process might damage the look of the finish, it also might help on a piece that has a significant amount of threaded boltholes

...what about semi-gloss black or flat-black brake caliper paint?...I'd think that these types of paints are more durable than others, no?...

...if you don't want to remove the swingarm or anything near it, you could use HD aluminum foil (like the kind dino wraps around his head to communicate with his mothership ) to gently, but tightly crush around the parts you don't want to paint...just prep, clean, and spray away...its so much easier than masking...

Vince Ive used the Duplicolor on 3 different swingarms. Never had a problem.
Its all about the prep work. And FWIW you can scratch powder. When you do, its a bitch to touch up.

I like the idea of painting the swingarm. What type of prep work is required, other than removing rear tire,
thorough cleaning and taping. Does the swingarm need to be sanded? If so, what grit did you use?
Sorry, I'm just not familiar with this.

TB, you are scaring me again.

Prep work is 99% cleanning! I first use Brake cleaner until there is nothing anywhere that when I spray I will see dirt, You can sand it, but I make sure that the part is warm and use a few Tacky sprays (Mist the paint on to the part. Then spray a few Light coverage coats. (Read the directions for timing on this step) usually a few hours later, then I spray with 2 finish coats, fairly wet paint for the correct finish and then wait for at least 24 hours and usually 48 hours before I use the part. I will paint my arm Saturday Night and use it Monday afternoon!

No Auto Zone? No Pep Boys?? some times "K" Mart or WalMart! If not, then where I said.

MW, you can paint the arm on the bike...but I like to thoroughly inspect the suspension bearings when its apart. I live 5 blocks from the ocean so corrosion is an issue for me.
Alcohol is a good cleaner and dries quick too. I use a mild degreaser like Simple Green for primary cleaning. Then spot clean with rubbing alcohol. Its recommended to remove the rear wheel for the best spray angles. Removing the rear sets helps too.
Tape or foil will mask fairly well. Take your time.
Areas of importance are the axle adjuster area and the back of the arm. Light coats of paint are best. Let it dry 30mins between apps.
Make sure you spray the brake hanger too. Looks funny with out it sprayed.
A matte or low gloss finish will match the frame perfectly.

I have figured out short tern and Long term, what I am going to go. I found the correct silver I needed (A little Yellowish) and I paln to paint it Saturday Night. my Short solution

Long term, I plan to strip the arm of paint, Chemical remover and a little sanding and then have a few coats of clear Urethane sprayed over it. This was, no scratches will be noticed. I thought about Anodise , but that scratches even easier!
