Next time...

Bart, I'll be a little more cautious on saying which doctor you might be going to see. Then again, I won't have to worry about that next time, will I?

Come on you guys quit picking on me.... I'm not a techno whiz and I cant take my bike apart in the dark and to tell you the truth, I pray that it doesnt have any problems that my brother and his friends can't figure out. (most of them harley folk..... they consider me the odd creature.... I love it) I dont have a computer camera or a scanner or any of that stuff. Spend my money on my bike... From the sound of it, in that way at least I'm no different from all of you! I dont ask to see what you look like or if you own a 12! Let me learn something so I dont look so stupid and then I'll show you what I look like! haha I take a respectful mile away step back from that drag racer zx12girl too...

im surprised ur havin probs there too redelk. maddog & i r pretty big open source advocates, and as such fans of mozilla (netscape) and linux. at the momen i am forced to use windows, but otherwise maddog & myself always run linux & use mozilla (actually, he takes it one step further & often uses conquere or another more pure gecko browser). it may sinply be a case of netscape not being set to use all fonts available on yer system. i use mozilla on this here box (.9.4 i think), and its pretty damn good (pre .9 versions were iffy). its does most things same as IE now. as one might expect, we prefer athlons over intels, and would take alphas or sparcs if we had the cash

as to the comment about defacto standards, im afraid thats quite off the mark. MS is not a standard. in fact they have a very annoying habit of doing their own extensions to standards, corrupting the whole point of standards. i like standards VERY much, but damned if anyone ever follows them (plus there's often competing standards, which really dont make sense).

furthermore to the whole anti-MS thing, I for one am split. i dont have a problem with monopolies in general as u usually get to b a monopoly by offering a really good product (in most cases at least). but thru several arguments about this topic with my business partner, i have come to believe that MS may actually have deserved the lawsuits. they have pulled some REAL nasty business practices. ill get some of the examples if anyone is interested. its just another case of the news never telling the whole story, jsut brushin over it so the public can make misinformed decisions about topics. but i dont know much of the story myself, so i tend to not spew too strong an opinion either way.

anywho, its way past my bedtime. gotta get up fer another 14 hour work day tomorrow. aint life grand?

Man I was waiting to see frEEK check in on this one, hope all is well with you. I agree with your standards comment, they are great when people follow them, unfortunately most people don't. At our shop we use the comment "Standards are great because there are so many to choose from". A lot of the work we do is system interfaces and deviation from the "standard" makes it a much more difficult task. It should be an easy question of "are you compliant to the standard" but it's not. We have to spend a lot of time sniffing out how much of the standard is complied with. My comment about the defacto standard was meant to be this, if you follow the road most people are on your trip will be easier. Now I'm not one to take the road most traveled in my personal life, that's a different story. But when I'm getting paid to get a implementation done in the most efficient manner and leave it with the most ability to be supported when I'm gone it leads me down that path. I know MS is not a standard, but since they are installed in 100% of the places we're in and the customers have staff with that knowledge then by definition they are the defacto standard, not THE standard, but defined by pure installed base.

If I had my choice our customers would be running on a different platform, but it was a business decision, based on the market. I'm ok with that. I'll play the lemmings game at work because it supports my ability to be otherwise when it's my time.

makes sense of course. i rather suspected that was what u were gettin at. fact is the popularity of their products means they can virtually dictate the standards. hell, excel is practically speaking the standard for spreadsheets for one. working with servers and browser based products all the time as i do, windows is fortunately not in my field of vision most of the time. the vast majority ofthe people we talk to r already using a linux of some sort. those who are not, we can usually convince them to switch. it just makes sense in this field. when ur dealing with office networks tho, u can;'t very well put redhat on all the workstations in most cases. it is finally gettin to the point where u can tho. what with staroffice being really full featured now & the actual windowing packages being more and more userfriendly (& more stable), un*xes r approaching readiness for the general public. a year ago or so i would tell anyone but professional programmers/admins to stay away from a linux desktop, but now id say give it a shot. hell, damn near everything people do these days is either browser based, or spreadsheet/document based, the latter of which is covered by staroffice. i can just imagine MS being forced to sell products that run fine on linux. HA!! ill tell ya one thing that i think is really keepin this stuff from takin off tho, and thats that the quality of programming in many open source products is iffy. take this board for example: the code sux! its hardly commented, its disorganized, its inefficient (but still fast), its full of bad coding practices (like code duplication and hardcoded vars). hell, the indentation isn't even close to correct in most places! whats with that? if i wrote a piece like that for a client, they'd tell me to fuck off! i could rewrite this damn board 2x faster & 10x cleaner/better in less than a week. its just stupid. im pretty sure ill end up doin that if i ever have time (yeah right, like ill ever have time).

so, the non-techies bored yet?

Microsoft standards comittee on plumbing:

We agree with the standard of hot water on the right tap, and cold water on the left tap, but are adding an extension to that standard that requires you to use Windows Home, or else you won't get any water at all!

On roads:

We agree with standards of cars on the right or left, but are adding the 'drunk Bill Gates' standard, that provides a third lane, alternating between both left and right lanes.
