You are all pawns of the great satan!

It is obvious that this site discriminates against users of Netscape browsers. All of you that use the great satan's (Bill Gates) Internet Explorer get to enjoy all of the nifty features (i.e. the little box that shows who's online/instant & private messages) of the site. Us Netscape folks DON'T! To make matters worse, When I use bold and italic commands, I don't see them unless I'm using IE. To hell with all you demon dogs!

I program dynamically created web pages. I have done this for the last 4 years. And before that regualr HTML design.

One of my websites... http://www.powerasp.com

Netscape was the browser of choice until about version 3.. that's when IE started kicking it's sorry ass all over God's green earth.

Netscape is a boggy piece of doggy poo and less people use it every day. It locks up more systems than Code Red can eat servers.

I have a list of about 20 major problems with it and web programing that I am not even going to get in to.

The people LEFT at Netscape must have anal probes up their poop pipes..

arrrggg

Long live Bill... and sombody buy me an XBox so I can hook it up to my Sony Wega HTDV at 1080i.

TWO STARS? TWO FUCKIN' STARS?

See? What did I tell you! Ya'll have been sucked in to Usama Bill Gates filthy den of evil if all I can rat is TWO FUCKIN' STARS!

I have both IE5 and Netscape 4.7 on this piece of shit I'm currently using (no Dave, I STILL haven't finished the new systems). Netscape seems to be faster loading on a 56K (the office will NEVER get DSL) and so much easier for a simple mind like me. What's funny is that IE crashes my system almost everytime I use it. Netscape rarely every has caused my system to completely crash.

Netscape is what I was raised on (ever since Mosaic and Mozilla) and it's to hard for me to go to the dark side. Then again, I won't go to Netscape 6, either.

Talk about getting with the times

Minimum requirements for Mozilla is a 233 MHz with 64 MB of RAM. Currently, I'm at 166 MHz and 96 MB. Just behind where I now sitting is the new systems I've been playing with (for over 4 months now). Two systems... each with 1.4 GHz (226 FSB) AMD, 768 MB DDR RAM and four 30 GB drives set up in two mirrored arrays (yes Dave, I finally got that far!).

I guess if I want to catch up with the times, I need to get those suckers online and dump the boat anchors. Well, at least I'll have something to do when it gets too cold to ride.

Actually...

the site typically works quite well with netscape... and mozilla... as in, I use mozilla on it all the time - no problems. I cant say I've noticed trouble under netscape either.
[ed. may be particular versions with table troubles or the likes tho?? always possible]

The site software wasnt designed to cater to IE unfairly [ahem, believe me, I wouldnt have done things that way ]

Be nice once you get your new boxes up and running Redelk, then you can run mozilla, it's a particularly lovely beast! [and all those gates lovers, and their IE crippleware, can have fun on their own ...poor buggers!]

So Red.. you dislike Intel and Microsoft ?

"I remember from the other board something you said onc about Intel chips"

I have seen so many problems and lockups over the years with non-intel processors.

I have definetely gave 3rd party chips a fair chance as I have built many computers over the years at work. For the most part their was always some sort of problem or incompatibilty these non intel chips caused. We can't have that sort of thing with servers that need to run 24/7 with high uptime.

Brands like AMD aren't too bad nowadays for the general consumer..but why not just have the real deal and save headaches.

This stuff is all so cheap now..

Silly boy!

Showers? That when da rain be fallin' from the sky, silly! We get dem all the time. Why would we want to be runin' a perfectly good bucket by puttin dang holes in da bottom of it? That ain't got nuttin' to do with cleanin' off yurself! That what dat wooden barrel at da end of da pourch is fer. Catchin' all dat rain from dem showers.

We take our bathin' and such real serious down in these parts! Dat's why we do it EVERY WEEK (except when dare be a real dry spell)! A right special event, if I do say so myself. That's why I be going furst in da washin' tub. Haven't you ever heard of, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water", before? Why dat only happened a few times when I be a youngin'. I reckon it didn't hurt me none, lookin' on hows I turned out okay.

Heated rocks? You yankees do crack me up! Don't ya'll know nuttin'? Not only do we got a nice iron (we are in da "I-ron Age", ya know?) that we heat up in the fireplace, but we got des bricks dat we warm up and be puttin' under da kids' quilt for foot warmers. Talk about "hi-tech"! Ya'll be so backwards!

It's the hate the big guy scenario. If someone is extremely sucessful everyone hates them. If Sam was still alive he'd still be #1, but the fortune is split between all the living Waltons and it doesn't look so bad. You hardly hear of the complaints about how big Wal-Mart crushed all the little guys and Sam got rich. But since Bill is #1 you get to hear about how he crushes the competition unfairly. I know if anyone of us was in that position we would all do it differently, but we aren't.

I'm not a fan of Microsoft, but I'm not a hater either. Some things they do extremely well and others they suck at, just like you and I. I use what works with the minimal hassle. I like using the things that are the defacto standards because it makes life easier. It was IBM in my early IS career, now it's Microsoft. It's just part of the game, deal with it or spend additional time doing things to work around issues. Your choice, whatever you like and works for you, do it.

AMD and Intel

ZX12R, I won't bore everyone again over these little systems I'm been putting together for work (but I will). I've been asking about which route to go for almost a year before I even bought the hardware. At that time, Intel had just fallen on it's face with the 1.3 GHz processor and Athlon 1.2 GHz were kicking the 1.4 GHz P4 butts.

Then the high price RAMBUS came out to go with the Intel chips, making them blazingly fast. Cheaper DDR RAM and faster FSB have allowed the AMD 1.4 to keep pace with the Intel 1.7 in almost every aspect of measuring processor capabilities. Like everything in the computer world, what was fast yesterday is old news today. What was always stable with most applications, might not always be the case today (didn't Intel recall all the 1.3 chips?) and the opposite is equally true.

It boiled down to this, money and what was available at the time (6 months ago). These two systems are replacing the company's current "graphic stations". Now if you realize that we are currently operating on 7+ year old 166 MHz systems, you must also realize that my attempts to get the company to let loose of ANY money for upgrades had been a battle... to say the least. Economics played a VERY big roll in what I was able to purchase.

I spent over a year and a half in research and asking questions from just about anyone that had a clue about computers (many on these boards). Like what brands of tires, oils or pipes are best, I got a wide variety of opinions and suggestions. During this time, processor speeds were always increasing and everything from video cards to motherboards were changing. As a matter of fact, I changed my selection of motherboards on the day I ordered the hardware because one came out that could hold 3 DDR RAM strips instead of two.

Because we do not use "conventional" graphics programs like Illustrator or PhotoShop, it further restricted my budget and choices of hardware. It's not that our software is more demanding of a processor (it's not), it's just that our software is way over priced and there really is no alteritives. I still had to keep in mind the demands of our output devices, both current and future. With a budget of less then $7000 ($1000 of it going to just the upgrades of our two graphics programs), getting the components that could handle or unique needs became quite a challange. Speed wasn't as much of an issue since anything would be faster then what we are currently using.

RAM was the issue. We needed something that was cheap enough to where we could get as much of it as possible. Even though our output devices (i.e. our Xante positive film laser printer) have their own RAM, they still suck off of the system's RAM. When it came down to it, at the time, the Intel and RAMBUS configuration was way out of our price range. A similar system with Intel hardware would have cost us an additional $3500 that I wasn't going to be able to get anyway. I was lucky to get the $7K since the bean counters were trying to keep me under $6K TOTAL.

Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20. There are a few things I might have done differently, but after just doing a review of what I could have got if I did it all over again today... there's really not a whole lot I would (or could have) have changed. Dumping the IBM hard drives for Western Digital (which I have always used before), would have been the first thing I would have changed.

Here's a "short list" of what each system has (we have two systems):

AMD Athlon 1.4GHz 266MHz FSB processor
Thermaltake Volcano II CPU fan
Gigabyte GA7DXR 266MHz FSB ATA100 RAID motherboard
3 - 256MB DDR PC2100 266mhz SDRAM (768MB total)
4 - IBM 30GB GPX75 DeskStar hard drives (120GB total)
TDK 40x/16x/10x CD-R/W/RW
Zip Internal 250MB drive
TDK 1.44MB floppy drive
Antec server case, ATX 300w ps
4 - 80mm case mounted fans
Asus GeoForce2 Pro AGP 4X 64MB DDR RAM
Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer PC 5.1 (yeah, I could have got a cheaper card, but why?)
Zoom PCI V.90 56K modem (we'll never get the company to spring for DSL)
CTX 19" Trinitron flat screen monitor
MS Natural keyboard Pro (replacing my current one)
MS USB Intellimouse Explorer (replacing my current one)
Belkin Regulator Pro UPS 525VA
MS Windows 2000 Professional

In addition to the above (times 2), I also got one each of the following:

UMAX PowerLook III flatbed scanner
D-Link network kit 5 port hub
D-Link 100BTX print server

... and for me personally (gotta sneak in what I could)

Altec ACS48 3 pc speaker set w/ 40w subwoofer (the Art Director got the little Altec ACS22 speakers)
D-Link USB FM radio w/ MP3 software
Gravis Destroyer tilt game pad

Now keeping in mind that I also had to get the upgrades for our graphics software that sucked up about a $1000 of my $7000 budget, getting all of the above is about the best I could do with what I had to work with. We are a small faimly owned screen print shop, that's been around for almost 44 years. "Family owned" means that my mother is the "bean counter". I had a very small window of oppertunity to get this stuff and I did what I could to get what we needed. Like I said, hindight is 20/20, but in my case, there is no going back and it might be another 7 years before I'll be able to get another shot.

Even though our current systems have grinding hard drives and flickering screens, they have not broken down yet. I'm not too worried about the AMD's stability with our applications. It's not like I plan on doing any overclocking (even though the GA7DXR board is an overclocker's dream being very receptive to overclocking). This is why I've not been in any big hurry to get the new systems online yet. I also don't get to spend a whole lot of time working on them during business hours. I sure as hell ain't going to let it cut into my riding time. Ah, but winter is quickly approaching and I'll have no choice but to finish putting everything together.

Though I love putting small systems together (as a hobby - nowhere close to being knowledgeable enough to do it for a living), I love riding and talking about bike even more. I could have easily spent the time it takes to put together my mindlessly rambling posts, working on the computers, but it not the way my priorities are. Hell, if I just spent half the time I spend writing my dribble I post here on putting the systems together, they would have been finished MONTHS AGO!

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

BTW, I really don't HATE Bill Gates

My referring to him as the "great satan" is mostly tongue in cheek. I think the government's anti-trust crap was total bullshit. I'm glad it didn't do to Microsoft what 10 years of government harassment did to IBM. Not that IBM would be on top of the heap, but spending all that time kissing the Justice Department's (there's an oxymoron) didn't help them any.

The same could be said for breaking up Ma Bell. It seems when someone does something right and makes a lot of money, somebody else starts screaming that it's unfair. This whinning of MS not sharing code or making manufacturers use MS IE, makes me ill. It's no better then that lady going after McDonald's because their coffee is hot and burned her when she spilled it on her legs. WAAAAAAH! TOUGH SHIT, LADY! You should have bought your coffee from some place that serves it COLD. Just for idiots like her!

Bill's business conduct pales when compaired to that of other industries (and I'm not talking about the oil or drug folks either... I support them too). Like Waco, it was just another act of the Justice Department grandstanding. The various state AGs that don't want to sign on to the agreement and just wanting to get re-elected. They already proved that with the tobacco settlement (when is there going to be an "alcohol settlement"?) They have done nothing but hurt the same people they claim to be protecting... US!

Naw, Bill's got it right. Now, Steve Jobs on the other hand... well, don't get me started on that dickweed!
