Battery Chargers / Storage
What do you recommend for storage/charging to keep the battery in good shape during winter months? I've read about a "Battery Tender" anyone have experience with these if so which model and where is a good place to order them online? Also should I remove the battery from the bike or disconnect it during charging/storage? Thanks in advance..

Ive got the Battery Tender and the "junior"one too. Either one will have you saying..."how did I get along without this?" It keeps the battery "fresh" for a long time! I just used it on a battery I found in my garage and 24hrs on the Tender, it was like new!
THe junior model is more portable and sells for $30 at just about every shop Ive ever seen. I take it on long road trips.
The standard Tender is $50 everywhere.
Probably one of the most "idiot" proof products out!
Order some extra leads for you other vehicles.
For those that have mulitple vehicles there is even a multi-port tender that is like $500 or so. Up to 10 batteries at once!

I picked up one of these for $39. Works like the battery tender except that once the battery is charged it goes into a reconditioning mode where it is supposed to generate a frequency that removes the deposits from the battery plates. I don't know about that part, but it keeps the battery charged and comes with the leads that you can hook up and leave on the bike.

If you buy one they give you one of these for free:

Harbor Freight- part # 41288-1rvh $9.99. Plug it in and forget about it. Works great! I have them on all my bikes. I leave the batteries in the bike.

That Harbor Freight price is hard to beat! Half the stuff in my shop came from HF. Got a smokin deal on a air compressor, all the hose and a reel. Little things do add up to. Go price a magnetic parts dish from Snapon, then price one at HF!

I put a screw in outlet in one of the light sockets on the garage door opener. Ran an extension cord down to my charger, set on 2 amp and hooked to the battery. Light stays on 3 minutes every time I open the garage door. 3 minute charge every time I pull out of the garage all winter.

Scooters idea is a good one. The worst thing you can do besides cooking the battery is let it run down completely. I open my garage 6-10 times a day, so that might work.
On the same note, if you don't open the door very often (I have lived where I couldn't even GET TO the door, and didn't ever open it), I just put the tender on a little timer in the garage. One of those little lamp timers you use when you leave the house on vacation. Maybe 60 minutes a day on the trickle setting.

The Battery Tender has a feature to keep the battery fully charged. If Ronco sold it, the marketing slogan would be "set it and forget it"....lol

Battery tender here too. I only use it for a couple days a couple times a month and switch back and forth between wifes bike and mine.
Also, store your battery in the cold. It slows down the chemical reaction making your battery last longer. -ZXtra
