Powder coating questions?
Anyone do their own powder coating? Thinking about powder coating a minibike frame. There are different hand held powder coating guns available. Thought about buying one from this place: http://www.columbiacoatings.com/index.htm
I do spray painting on the side but I don't know the first thing about powder coating. Looks to be a simple process? Anyone????

I've done quit a bit of it with stuff bought from Eastwoods. Have had very good results, only problem doing bigger parts like frames is having an oven big enough to handle it.

Eastwood is the most popular supplier, and Phil is right, getting an oven big enoungh to do a frame would be costly. Powder coating isn't like spray painting other than trying to get a fairly even coat. With spray painting you are concerned with that fine line between a sag and thats super shiney finish. Powder coating is just laying down a coat of powder and there is an electrical hookup to the part to the powder will attract to the part.
But if you have access to an oven that is big enough,(don't use the one in the kitchen) , then it is sooo cool, you will be powder coating everything.

I saw on the above website that they where using a propane heat lamp in the photos drying a bike frame? What are your thoughts about this?

As long as it melts down the powder, that may be just the ticket.

I have also seen infrared lamps advertised . It would take some time to go over a whole frame ,spot to spot, but you would get it done. I am curious how even the finish would look using lamps curing differant areas like that compared to melting out the whole thing at once. I havn't tried it yet but you should be able to sand and polish this paint just like any other. At work we have a walk in oven for bakeing plastic parts to stress relieve them and as soon as I can figure out how to program the dam thing in goes the z1r frame.
