Question: Mounting New Turn Signals
I wanna replace the stock front turn signals with some Lockhart 'short stalks'. I know lots of you have done this. Does the stud on the 'short stalk' just go into that rubber thingy where the OEM light screwed in? Is this the way to do it?
There isn't a ZX12R version of these that fit nicely into the original holes so I guess you need to retain the rubber base and just unscrew the OEM blinker unit?
Or do you trim the rubber piece down a bit to get it closer to the fairing?
Well, thanks for beatin this dead horse again for another new guy.

if u use the flushmount IV, they just need a little grinding to fit in the recess.
if u use regular shortstalks, i believe u need some plates to cover the holes. I know hugh industries sold some. or u could always make your own of course.

Thank you frEEk. I found a Flushmount mini, small, medium and large. Which did you use?
I found your discussion in a previous post (Sept 15th) ... "lots have gone with the LP IV's, as did i, but now i really dont like em much. u can barely see them. "...
That's kinda why I am leaning towards the shortstalks. Aerodynamics aside, it sounds like the flushmounts are too close to 'marker' lights that shine sideways, instead of towards the front.
I don't mind making a plate to cover the hole, anyone with a suggestion? I have sheet aluminum (Home Depot). Just cut a blank plate? Or cut 2, and sandwich them around the hole with a bit of foam or caulk between?

I made my backing plates from some UHMW black plastic.
My signals are Bikemaster brand, $14 a pr. They measure 2 1/4"x1 3/8"x3" overall .

I lined the inside of the housings with aluminum tape which seems to have made the light nearly double in brightness.
I used a fender washer on the backside to span the opening in the fairing.
I cut the ends off the oem signals and soldered to the new wires. I believe that LP sells new ends to adapt to the oem wiring harness if you dont want to cut your oem signal leads off.
Good luck with yours.

Fender washer is a great idea. So is the tape! I like that.
But what is UHMW plastic? Is that a specialty item? Rather stiff, and cuts with a saw?
Thanks for the pics! Nice job. Makes a lot more sense to me now!

i believe the LP mini is the one that kinda fits. when i bought em it was jsut the IV, were'nt not sizes to choose from. i really don't like em much for visibility reasons, as u found.
definitely some good advise from ozzy about adding reflective backing! i put shortstalks on the back this past summer, and i wasnt happy with the light they put out at all untill i painted the inside of the housing in chrome bumper paint. like ozzy said, it worked beautifully! much brighter now. but mroe important than just brighter, is the light's spread. before it was jsut a little point source from the bulb, whereas now the whole lense emits light. i _think_ some of the better short stalks do come with reflectors don't they? not sure. but I aint buyin the flushmounts for the front again, that is for sure.
