Oh, yeah. I went, and I had such the blast. No more chicken strips left on my formerly new M1 rear tire. The 190 made a huge difference. As you'll remember, we got 5 sessions/drills throughout the day where they gradually gave you more freedom. It was such the blast, and I can't wait to go back for the track day this Friday and kick some 600 butt!!!

The First session: After the classroom lecture, we went out on the track for a two lap, single file, introductory laps. After that we were told to go out in 4th gear and no brakes and practice turns. On the first lap, 4 people went down in the first lap of the session. (One guy right behind me.) 3 people went down in turn 11, which is a 130 left hander onto the front straight. A lot of us took misjudged the corner forgetting that it was not a 90-degree turn. 1 guy screwed up on the corkscrew and spread dirt everywhere before breaking his collarbone.

The carnage was bad. The first drill was supposed to teach you to roll on the throttle as soon as possible in the middle of the turn to stabilize the bike. I failed miserably.

The Second Session: Keith Code taught us how to take a good line. Basically, he said not to turn in until you see the apex. He said the biggest mistake was to turn in way too early. He reinforced this by putting X's down on the track to mark turn-in points. With one less thing to think about, I was a lot more confident.

This session, they gave us 3rd & 4th gear, but still no brakes. I was amazed how much the x's helped. After the first session, i was about ready to go home with my tail between my legs. I was glad I didn't.

The Third Session: This time, they wanted us to focus on leaning the bike faster. They convinced us that the faster you lean your bike and stabilize it, the less lean angle you will need. This session, they said 3rd & 4th gear light brakes.

By this session, I was getting fairly comfortable at the track. I was getting so comfortable that I was getting kinda frustrated at having to be in 3rd gear coming out of turn 11. I wanted to take off. But, things were good. The number one goal was to not crash.

The Fourth Session: This was where they taught us where to look when going into a turn. During the drill, my eyes lit up when they said, "3 gears, light brakes."

I said, "Which ones?" The answer was, "Any three you want." I was neaarly spooging myself thinking about coming out of turn 11 in second gear. Long story short, yes, leaned over wheelies are fun!!!

After this session, I spoke to the instructor, and he told me that he couldn't keep up with me. Of course, I won't tell anyone else that he was talking about the front straight. He said that I pulled away from him like he wasn't even moving. (I love my 12.)

The last session: We got the green light to go all gears all brakes. I did my best to not just go totally agro. I tried my best to work on the stuff we were taught the rest of the day. But, then a chick passed me, and all that stuff went out the door. I tried to rationalize it by telling myself that she's been racing for two years. She's just a plain better rider than me. Well, my ego took over. Screw the drills, I was dead set on passing her back. I just stayed on her butt because I knew that I could take her on the front straight. We get around most of the track, and just as my luck goes, we get the checkered flag signaling the end of the session.

I had such the blast! I highly recommend this school to anyone. I may not be a racer, but this school has given me a lot of skills that will totally help me on the street. What I used to consider riding at 90% is now riding at 60%.

I hope to come back from this Friday's track day with similar stories as Jason had.

sounds like me wannabe, when I took the 12 to Ed Bargys school in GA, left there all smiles......and the front straight was a blast.....just hated seeing my buddy who was an instructor pass me on the inside of turn one...on a ZRX.....but I guess when you are an instructor and the 95-96 wera supertwins champ you can pretty much do that at will....lol

Yeah! Are the kneepucks toast or what?

Awesome dude. I did CASBS @ Sears couple years back on a ZX6r & had a ball. The limitations thing I hated at first, but after trying it awhile it was cool. I can't imagine how you lugged 4th in turn 11.....bbooooooowwwwaaaaaaaaaa (snicker)

So did you do any speed wheelies through turn one or what?

GOOD SHIT wannabe!!!

There is a very good chance that i will be somewhere in cali in the spring to take level II. then take level III at pikes peak in the summer as well. and then prolly take level IV back in cali in the fall.

you will not believe how good you will be on the track now that you have learned the ways of the master. a little advice..........go out real slow for the first 3-5 laps, find the line, let all the chumps pass you cause they think they are so fast. then start taking each turn fatser, improving your line and entry speed. master every corner before you really open it up, cause 1 bad corner ruins the lap........bigtime.

once you understand every corner, you will shine bro like you cant believe. every chump on the track will be scrambling to keep up and they will only fall behind more.

zhoo,

the knee is not terrible. it doesnt hurt at all and feels fairly strong and stable. the only issue i have at the moment is that it is kinda stiff and my range of motion is 50% of what it should be.
monday im gonna go snowboarding on some groomer and test it out. i think this will also stretch it out a bit.

fingers crossed,

jason

I just got the picture from a friend of mine who took pictures at the trackday today. I just thought I'd share this shot of me going down the famous Corkscrew at Laguna Seca on my ZX-12r. I always watched the big boys go down the track, but it's a different ballgame actually riding that track at speed on something with 160+ HP at the rear wheel. Definite kick in the pants!!

What did you think of the decreasing radius turn that follows the corkscrew? It is a good place to pass the feint of heart.

I absolutely loved it!!! Yes, it's a decreasing radius turn, but you could treat it like a long sweeper. I took me a while to figure out that turn, but once I did, I was great.

When I first rode Laguna, there was no real run off and frankly a big bank/wall and a tree was near the edge of the track when you came to the corkscrew. Come in to ot and instead of having some run off like the picture shows you crashed really hard!! Now it looks like a different turn and is a helluva lot safer.

Also for those that have not actually seen this turn in person it looks a lot taller in person!!

Yup, it drops 3 stories in something like 50 feet plus the right turn in the corkscrew itself is blind. You just have to know where to drop in. Here's another closeup of me. You can see how many people messed up and accidently took a shortcut through the dirt.

This was taken on the sighting lap when my tires were still cold. Yeah, that's it. That's the ticket. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
