Thanksgiving Project-Polishing Rim Lips

Found a nicely-documented article on www.zx6r.com that discusses how to spiff up & polish the rims. (URL is http://motorcyclejew.com/images/polish.html, or click link on zx6r.com)

But anyway, I have an '01 12R, and the (black) rims look to be powder coated, not just painted. Anyone tried this before? Is it powdercoat, and can that stuff be stripped off the rim like the article shows? They are just using a regular high-quality paint stripper (methylene chloride), and masking tape.

Wha da ya tink? Will this be pain or pleasure ?

Use "aircraft stripper" from the parts store and keep keep ambient temp above 70 degrees. Works 10 times better warm. I didn't use masking tape, just a small modeling brush. The stuff takes 10-15 minutes to start working anyway so you have plenty of time to wipe any mistakes off as long as you do it right away. There's a few pics in HERE of Pop doing his.

Does that stuff have to be neutralized after you finish? We had a GSXR in the shop the other day and the guy used oven cleaner and the stuff was eating the aluminum frame under the tank where he had not rinsed all of it off.

I'd be tempted to spray that stuff you buy to neutralize battery acid or make up some baking soda and water. Maybe I'm paranoid but just my thoughts!

I didn't , just washed with soap and water for good measure. You don't want to be flinging that stuff around. Use some safety glasses and rubber gloves. If you get it on your skin you will know it in short order. Nasty. You can do it with the wheels on like Dad did but far easier to take 'em off and put 'em up on the bench.

As I mentioned before, use a small model brush to cut a smooth line, a bigger one for the larger area. Use the wooden tip of the small brush to scrape between the rim and tire.

Thanks Scooter for the tips. I don't have a front stand yet, so I am going to try it on the bike first. If I fuck it up, guess I'll have motivation to get the front stand sooner than later, but my money is slated for my Dino-seat right now.

btw Zhool, the article mentions that you need to wipe the cleaner off after it's done (abt 15 minutes), and also rub down with laquer thinner to remove the stripper residue. I've used this stuff before, and it will remove paint (and irritate skin) wherever it is dropped. Gloves, newspaper and long sleeve shirt is in order.

Scooter's dad's turned out pretty nice! I'm hoping for a Kawi-gasm by Friday! oooohhh-ooohh-ooohh it's starting already!!

I did it, it's easy. The coating is not powder coat, just a thick paint. It comes off well with aircraft (aluminum) stripper.

So then, how good do you want it to look? Half assed good enough for ya?

No?
Then you should take a little care to do it right.
I removed both wheels and had the tires pulled off. I also removed the brake disks, but I wanted to paint also. No need to mess with the brakes if you're not gonna paint.
By removing the tires, you get two benefits. One, the stripper is nasty stuff, and I wasn't comfortable with getting it on my tires. Two, it is much easier to get all the paint off the bead so you can't see it at all.
I also used masking tape, and still took care not to get the stripper anywhere it shouldn't be.
It's an easy job, but taking care of the details can make a big difference. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
