2000 ZX 12 Overheating issues??
Got a chance to pick up a low mileage 2000 ZX12 with only 3200 miles on it , guy who owns it is 65 and just needs to sell it . Now my question is was there a problem with overheating on these bikes ? He says the reason he is selling is since being new it has been in & out of the shop 9 times for overheating issues, now he bought it new and has babied the bike riding wise but I do not want to purchase a ticking time bomb. Any help appreciated.

what do you think? you see hundreds of members on here with 12rs,, they are not prone to overheating,, there is an underlying problem if there is even a problem,, if the price is right buy it!

I have had mine get hot a few times......but in Texas @ 105-110 air temp and who knows what the road temp is.........you wont find many bikes that will tolerate that kind of heat
But seriously I dont think the 12 will run in stop and go traffic @ 30mph without going to the mark
past 9 0clock . If you slow roll alot ...the fan will run almost constantly....now this is all relative to the
ambient temperature......
the heat gauge looks like the hand on a clock....if gets hot enough to start flashing then its HOT
Buy it if its clean and not leaking...........
just because it belongs to a man in his mid sixties dont mean JACK
The fastest guys around here are in that age group..........yep

Try purging the system first and if ya want, changing to some water wetter, engine ice,ect.ect.ect.....But is it really over heating or just doing what it`s supposed to do.....I put a manual switch on mine for that 30 mph slow crap that I hate to do.....Unless there`s a head gasket problem or pump prob.`s it should be alright as long as he didn`t let it get to like 11;oo o`clock or something....Like Texas12 says.......

ive had mine flashing several times and its been fine. playing with maps and the data logger in the garage without a big fan can do that(oh shit, how long has that been flashing? key off now ) . its never over heated at the track even with nitrous. more than likely theres a little air in the cooling system

My 2000 does the same thing I also put a switch on it to try and get ahead of the overheating. It cools down pretty quick when I start moving, so i found this 7" fan just like the one Schnitz sales, but cheaper. I plan to add this to mine this winter to cool the bike faster. Here is the link http://www.robietherobot.com/Storm/products.htm?category=Cooling Fans&cart=11800935263 The 10" is too big so dont buy that one I made that mistake for you already.

2000 a1 did the same thing to me in the texas heat / traffic, still remember how pist i was gettin watching that damn gauge screaming at me as im forced to stop and go stop and go, aahhhhhh...anyway, the headers were pushing heat into the system in my case so i wraped the pipes, added purple ice and new coolant (flushed system) to be sure, oohhhhh yeah thats nice. had to dial the bike a little after wrap due to increased vacuum at the the throttle bodies and better back pressure. buy it, mod it.
