Picture of sprocket cover mod

In pursuit of more weight savings and a little different look. I took the time to cut the sprocket cover /guard. The cover is thick plastic and cuts with a sawzaw. Since doing this I have been amazed at how many people have noticed it.

I used the natural cut line supplied by Kawi. The cover has a transition right where I cut it.

The reality if you have taken yours off and looked at it the cover gets packed with crap. This mod makes it easier to blow the crap out. And makes it easy to keep an eye on your sprocket for wear. Pretty common on pretty much every race bike.

i have taken it off and have notice some crap, but it didnt really seem to get in the way that much. interesting idea anyhoo. i always wonder if i properly fastened that bendable washer enough so that the nut doesnt pop off at 150 mph and then lock the fucker up only to have me superman it down the asphalt.

maybe i should check.....hmmm

Well if you look at the sprocket it terms of rotation. The faster you go the mor the sprocket is trying to tighten the nut. Now if you were going 200 and stop instantaneously there could be a chance that the nut might rotate counterclock wise a hair! But an instant stop from 200 would have really bad implications anyway. Properly torqued you really don't need the peened over washer, but this is one of the old got have it things! I actually just torque my axle nut and do not run a cotter pin. And guess what I have never had the nut come lose let alone fall off!

but why not run a cotter pin? seems like a good idea and its quick and easy.

oh and since i didnt look at the rotation...thank you, now i feel better. i'm too lazy to take that fucker off again anyway.

I wash and or polish on my bike a ton. And I can't tell you how many times I have torn up the wash mit, towels and my hands on the frigging cotter pin. And again I challenge the need. It is a great idea for people who don't have a torque wrench or don't ever look over their bike!

It's kind of like safety wiring your radiator cap. You drive 3000 miles in truck to get to the races. Without the truck cap falling off and suddenly it is necesary to wire your motorcycle's radiator cap on! Right! Plus the other interesting thing I love to hear ansered is if it is important to torque something to 94 ftpnds. And you do this to the axle nut and now it doesn't line up for the cotter pin. Do you over torque the nut to line things up or under torque it to line up? In my case it is torqued to 94 pounds and it doesn't come lose!

I don't use a cotter pin either. I use one of those pins I got at the local tractor shop. Slip right on and go.....

It sort of reminds me of the old race days where we did this to get at the Sprocket nut and remove everything while retaining the cover! Very Racy!

Is there a disadvantage to just removing the sprocket cover all together?

I choose to leave some just in case the chain did snap. This way the piece of steel under the cover is still there helping to protect the case.

I use the same kind of pin on my rear axle (SS acft. variety)

I kind of like it.If I had an extra cover I think I'd mod one of them.

Ya know, would be cool to mod the cover like that, then put a piece of clear plexiglass in there...

The interesting thing is that the cover is plastic. Thick heavy duty plastic. I originally thought it was magnesium or aluminium. If you drill or cut on it with power tools you have to take care as it likes to melt and attach to the blade.

I took mine off, but left the metal guard on. I'm figuring that if the chain does let got at speed, the plastic part won't offer any additional protection beyond the metal guard anyway.

Pretty much the truth. I have had luck in these cases where the plastic kept the chain on the sprocket long enough to feed the chain clear

good deal but I seriously doubt that you saved much weight on that plastic part. a few ounces I would say. and I have a pin in my axle like you would have on your hitch. the small pin that locks onto the hitch pin.

The old saying is an ounce here and ounce there and pretty soon your talking serious weight. My 12 probably weighs less then any 12 on this board and damn few out there will match up with it on the scales. Now in my case that's a different story!
