Off topic, finished building stair rails and balusters I know it's way off topic but I thought I'd show you what I've been working on at home. On our stairway we had an ugly, painted over 10 times iron railing that just had to go. I priced it out for a contractor to instal a new oak railing and balusters but it was going to be $1500+. So I decided to do it myself. This is all built from roughsawn lumber from a mill, nothing was prebuilt. The rails and posts are made from gluing up 5/4" boards to get the proper thickness. 30 balusters all routed on all four corners for decoration. It took about 1 week to complete it working on it after I got home from work and on Sat and Sun. It ius stained a colonial stain with 4 coats of polyeurothene for gloss and protection. Total cost for me doing it was $250 including hardware and stain and Poly.

Very nice, and probably better quality than you would have got had you let someone else do it. You care a lot more about it than they do.

Nice job. As a General Contractor I can't hardly think of anything that I would rather not do then work on the house! But I respect people that do. Much like the preverbial mechanics car that is need of work, my house could use some!

Good job Otis! You must not be a carpenter by trade. I still have all my handrails sitting on the table saw table. (been there for about 4 years now).....one of these days......

No, I'm not a carpenter Dino, I'm a woodworker. I usually stick to building furniture, but this is something our house needed badly.
