headlights
if you had to get rid of the dual headlights for a smaller single headlight, what bike would have what you want? i kinda want to put something where the lights are

i think i may have decided to go with one very small projector style light in place of the city light. ive been told R6 lights may be the ticket.
going to paint on a set of oem style lights, possibly as eyes like the following pics

the reason to get rid of the lights is to run 2 oem batteries up there as ballast weight, and give me the added benefit of 24v starting. i plan on needing it

Scott, interesting idea. There will be drawbacks, make sure you get a good shock built.

ill be taking the 12 pounds of steel/lead off of the forks with this. ill be adding that much weight back to the bike with the second battery(11 pounds) and brackets, but the middle of the bike will be lighter with an empty battery box. i get to loose a couple pounds from taking out the oem lights and going with a small one.
overall im hoping for a net loss of a few pounds, and have the weight situated much farther ahead than normal to help keep the front tire planted.
i will be getting the shock revalved and resprung to suit the WB.

do a small HID projector.. or a projector in general. alot of concentrated light in a small package. only drawback with HID is you'll need to put the ballast somewhere... more weight as well. not much, but i dunno if thats an attractive option.

weight in the front end is a good thing, but im guessing the HID conversion would be a lot more $ than just a regular light. i may upgrade it later on tho. any recommendations on where to score a TINY one that would still have an ok low beam for night time drag racing?? (cheap is good )

i have a projector if you want it. take your pick. i have 2 BMW M3 (H7) projectors and one from some sorta mazda that would need modified. it's very nice tho. imho, better light dispersion than the BMW pieces.
i had an H7 HID kit but it blew up.
you want a projector, let me know.. i'll et pics if you want

the M3 ones are maybe 5" or so? they're out of an entire headlight assembly for a 95 BMW M3.. the mazda piece is kinda odd. it's attached to a cast aluminum piece that is pretty big that housed porbaboy a 6" dia high bem reflector.. i can always plasma it off before shipping tho.
im gonna try to remember to get a pic of the M3 ones for you. .they're in one my toolboxs at the shop. if you want, maybe i can get my camera working and get some light-at-night shots so you can see mean divergence and compare the light profiles.. take the better one.

ok.. heres the mazda one.. i fixed my pos camera just for ya.. lol

heres what your standard 35W ballast will look like. that is an H7 bulb.. however, a "TRUE" HID bulb is the little twistlock-style D2S bulb next to it.. you can see the differences.. the price is a major difference too. that D2s bulb is $120.
not sure about the H7.. you can get H7 kits from DDM tuning or f-sane
the lights i have on my bike ( that utilize the D2S bulbs) are about $1200 a piece if you wanna order them thru mercedes benz.. lol

heres the typical color of the HID when a "custom" color isn't called out... i think you'd be fine tho with a regular incandescent in there.. i'll throw you one as well.

Jim, those lights are badass! is the project progressing any since you last posted about it?
are these lights low beam only? if so would i be able to put in one of my stock headlights to get high and low? I really only need low...
(and thx for the pics!)
how much would you want for the Mazda light?
thx for the link Tim, but i think they might be a little big?

scott, you want it, its yours.
i had a bunch of shit here, but forgot to sign in and lost it all
that particular light is for low-beam only.. but some have a high beam solenoid. mine do. thing is, at least on the 7-R, the low beam and high beam circuits are inverted.. never on at the same time.. so i had to put a diode in. .i also ran uber wire to a relay because they flickered pretty hard core. thats VERY bad for the ballast and bulbs.'
behold the magic of M.S. Paint.

you can mix and match, depending on what your'e doing, but i'm willing to bet that if you did an H7 HID, you'll never even notice turning the high beam on. lol. they're that bright.
i do have the M3 light with me if you wanna see that, too. have 2 of those.. those will actually fit in your stock headlight housing.
ill get some pics and some light pattern shots for ya in a bit.

oh.. sadly, no REAL progress on my bike. .had alot of problems lately with fueling.. the contacts inside the pump ( diaphragm pump) had welded together and sheared below the weld and the arc eroded the carbon.. they self destructed.. been acting up.. jsut couldn't place the root cause.. KNEW it was fuel tho.. but ya.. bitch left me stranded in a parkinglot yesterday.. 4 hours and half the toolbox from home later, i'm back on the road.. ran perfect today.. lets hope it stays that way!!
STILL looking for a T2, T3, or T25 turbo.. can't find one to save my life.
waiting on hearing about a job too.. maybe i can afford to start fabrication and assembly if i get some cash flow generated!

if the M3 light is 5 in, its way too big, im just wanting 1 small one like the Mazda light to fit where the city light was. the rest should be filled by batteries, and other stuff. the LMA3 should fit perfectly on top of the ram air scoop, and seeing how its a pretty flat piece, i should be able to get G force

thank you very much for the offer of the free light Jim, but Im going in a new direction. (cheaper and easier usually win me over :P)
I took apart the stock head lightight assembly (baking in an oven at 200 for a few minutes works great) and i should be able to trim the plastic to fit the bulbs much farther forward. this is what i have for a battery box so far

nice battery bracket!
i wonder a lil bit about adding weight above the center of gravity, even in the front.
It'll be interesting to see how much it helps.
good luck!

thanks Karl, I hear its common on grudge bikes to put a battery up there so i decided to go for 2
this is also freeing up a location for the c-16 tank and fuel pump for my fogger kit. weight from the tail moved to the center of the bike
