Blue on pipe.lean. I'm starting to notice some light blue on my header pipes about 8-12 inch's from the exhaust header bolts,on all 4 header pipes.i heard this is a lean issue,pipe is s.s w/carbon can.is this true or more b.s talk?was told to richen p.c up a bit,but i'm quite happy with my current map.maybe i should add 2% fuel in p.c111.at 20-80%t.p,from 6k-10k r.p.m.anybody deal with this blue yet?

My entire header exhaust system is still all stock...used to be silver of course when I first bought the 12, now the gold tinted discoloration has creeped up the entire pipe. Good ole titanium.

Get the same thing on my Stainless headers. Heat does funny things to metal ____________

It wouldn't hurt to get it sniffed. But Header pipes do change color. And often times the biggest color changes occur on bikes that set in traffic more then then guys who get to run in the wide open spaces. That said if you are going to run accross TEXAS wide open you will see a significant change. But since most guys honestly don't run with the throttle wide open that long it usually long slow trips in traffic that blues the pipes!
Your header pipes and for that matter the entire exhaust system will have an oportunity to get some color in it if you have it custom mapped! Those runs from about 60% throttle up will definitely put some color in your pipes!

I know the pipes change colors,but the mechanic said blue was a lean condition,but we all know how that goes,one never knows.i'm just curiou if blue does in fact mean lean,thats the only color my pipe has on it.yes i do need a custom map,hopefully soooooon...

The blueing is a result of heat. And blueing at the or near the head is pretty common with or without a lean condition. We are dealing with heat at that point. So things could be normal, but a lean condition will certainly cause the heat and the subsequent blueing of the pipe as well. If you can't afford a custom map, call a dyno facility near you and ask them to sniff the bike. You may be running lean in your cruising zone. If you do go in try to mark the throttle position you cruise at. It should not be all that expensive for them to check it.

From what I've been told, the "blueing" is from permiation of the metal with contaminates absorbed when the given metal reaches a temperature specific to the type of metal thats being heated. Titanium will change color at a different temp then nickel or aluminum etc. I guess when metal starts to become fluid its properties change. Some of you chem guys could describe this better i'm shure.
But if you knew the make-up of the stainless then you would know at what temp the stainless would "blue" at and you would know the exact temperature of the exhaust where the blueing stoped on the pipe.
There is a paint that works great for identifying this location and many racers over the years have used this "blueing" to tune the engines header primary tube length. There is books on how to do this and what it all means as far as the engine is concerned. Thats a whole nutter nut.
But the bottom line is that its perfectly normal to have a "blueing" line on a tube exhaust system.
If you like to tinker and plan on using any type of fuel control device I reccomend installing a Halmeter and O2 sensor. That or a pyrometer that montiors each cylinder, but thats much more expensive an option and the pc-III doesnt allow individual cylinder and ignition timing adjustments.
