2002 ZX12 TURBO
Hello all, its been some time since I been here, Im told this is the best place to get advice on the ZX12, and reading in the ZX12 forum id say thats correct. Im thinking of building a turbo. I baught a bunch of parts from a racer that was getting out, I have a rayjay turbo setup looks like a Mr. Turbo kit, im planning on this being a streetbike, how much Hp can I safely make with stock crank, stock rods, and low compression pistons? what upgrades are neeeded for fuel delivery ? If anyone here has pics of a 12 with a turbo installed with the bodywork removed I like to see them. I hear the airbox can be a problem for turbos, how big a problem is this? all help appreciated............

check out Doug Meyers turbo, it set a record on the salts.
yeah the air box must be welded up, its also the frame. its ok if you can fabricate, but super expensive if you cant.
NLR used to list a turbo kit for a stock bike that put out 295 hp
you will probly get told a million times to turbo a diff bike, but if you can fabricate stuff, go for it.

yeah I know its not the bike of choice for this I have a 2000 ZX12 with a 1290cc I have been trying to sale for some time. everytime I plan on getting away from the 12s I find parts for them I cant refuse getting, I have everything to do another 1290 with a nice head. but I also have a good start to a turbo setup and I think the turbo would be more fun than the 1290 on the street.

Yes, the turbo is fun, and no, you don't have to weld up the airbox. I am running 18 lbs. of boost with a Mr. Turbo kit, and if you follow his directions and all have the parts from the kit, it works fine. The kit comes with a plate that bolts to the air filter housing, and a block off plate for the right inlet. The turbo feeds the left inlet with an adapter. Find ALL the holes in the airbox and plug them. There are several. You also need a scavege pump to return oil from the turbo to the case. All in the kit. There are pictures of the install on the Mr. Turbo site.
If you plan on more than 6 or 7 lbs, a lockup clutch is recommended. The trans can be a weak link, I am on number 3. Finally got a rebuild from Bill Robinson, and it has been fine.
I am still running stock rods, but forged pistons, stiffer valve springs and cylinder studs. The engine is coming out in a few weeks for upgrades. we will see how everything is holding up then.

Fuel mods are minimal right now. Doing a secondary fuel rail this winter, as 18 lbs is pushing it. When I bought the kit, the fuel pump goes to Mr. Turbo for a mod. I think all they do is adjust the regulator to max. The I installed an adjustable fuel pressure regulator that has a sensing line to the airbox. At low boost or on the street, about 60 lbs. At higher boost, up to 72 at idle. I am not sure how high the pressure goes under boost. I will look the next time on the dyno.
Woppi, Nice bike! Wish I had room in the garage.
