Clutch issues with the 12
So my Muzzy clutch arrived today, so rather then do it myself, I took it down to my dealer to have them do it. I figured they would have the right tools that I dont have and I could make sure it was done right.
So I call, and turns out that the clutch is covered under warranty, as I posted earlier. Of course, I'm shocked since everyone on this board told me good luck since it's not under warranty.
So I get down there, and the service manager said he has been through this in the past, and the clutch is considered a "wear" item that is not covered under warranty. Either way, I just wanted my new clutch put in so I could ride, ride, ride.
So there ripping the clutch all out, the mechanic doing this right in front of the service manager. The ENTIRE clutch was BONE DRY, no exxagerating. Everything in the clutch was burnt, dry, worn down, no sign anywhere of a drop of oil. Not one.
The mechanic pushed the issue with the service manager, emphasizing that it shouldnt be that dry. So the manager called up Kawi who agreed to buy a clutch and cover it under warranty.
I was told that Kawasaki knows they have a problem at hand with oil not getting to the clutch. They faxed to the dealer this piece of paper that tells and shows holes that need to be drilled all along the clutch to ensure oil gets in. The Muzzy one already had the holes, but not nearly as many as what Kawi was saying.
So the labor was free to put the Muzzy clutch in. And they are going to order another clutch, and just give it to me to do what I want. They will drill holes in it, and I suppose I'll hang on to it for the next time I need a new clutch.
So the clutch looked fine, the only reason it was slipping was due to lack of oil. Kawasaki admitted to the dealer that they knew there was a problem. A lot of people have been complaining about this issue. So why does Kawi not do anything about it?
The way the mechanic talked, even at 12000 miles, the clutch should have continued to be fine had oil gotten in. This sucks that Kawi is not standing behind their flagship model.
But with the new Muzzy clutch in, the ride tonight was hella fun....even if the late night weather was sub 20's.

Great news, service like that is rare.
Let them know you appreciate it, maybe we can start a trend.

I think getting warranty service is as much of function of having a dealer that works with you as it is Kawasaki themeselves. I had one clutch covered under warranty. My dealer has always worked with me on things. It all depends on how the dealer presents the problem to Kawasaki. If dealer says yes, the clutch is gone but it looks burned, and his rear tire is worn out at 3000 miles and there is rubber under the fender, then your screwed cause they aint gonna cover it. Clutches are seemed to always been the hardest part to get covered. Kawasaki knows the clutch is somewhat substandard in the 12R, and people really have to push to get them to warranty it.

MAN!
I just woke up from a dream in which I was out riding and couldn't go more than 10-15mph because my clutch was slipping horrible.
I could hear some nasty grinding whining sound and for some reason, in my dream I would not pull over! LOL!
I had to stop for a construction zone but kept on going after that, grinding on down the road with a couple other bikers along in the group.
What a nightmare!

Im glad it worked out for you.... They covered mine also drilled the holes and installed zx6 springs. Dealer also said that Kawasaki knows about the problem but they figure most people will just buy a new one so why do a recall..
sucks huh?

They used clutch springs from a ZX-6?
All Kawi was willing to replace for me was the clutch hub and the plates.

The ZX6 springs are actually stiffer.

I didnt think they were stiffer...I thought they were just longer.
Then again the old "squeeze one with my fingers in each hand" testing method might have left a lil room for error

The science on springs was boring to me so I slept through that lecture back in college! But I have been told that they are stiffer. That said how much I'm not certain. I also know that when it comes to clutches, a minute amount of additional spring tension times the number of springs in the clutch goes along ways.
And I I like you sometimes question my accuracy of squeezing the spring between my fingers!

Yeah, will do. I will also post a copy of the paper that explains what Kawi wants dealers to do (how to) drill the holes in the clutch setup, etc.

That paper the dealer said they will give me when I pick up my new stock clutch that Kawi is sending me. Next week, I'll be in there for my 12000 mile scheduled service so I'll pick it all up then and scan it in, and post it. So another week at the most and I'll have it. Sorry for the wait.

Since you like your Aprilia so much, how about we make a deal. I come back alive from Kuwait and you kick me down that RC51 of yours. Again, since you have an Aprilia that is so much better.
It will give me something to look forward to....ZHooligan gots all the hook-ups!!
