I just bought a bandsaw from Harbor Freight, 14", 4 speed, the range is 600-2700 fpm. The thing is very heavy duty cast iron and looks to be of good enough quality for home use. The only problem is speed, I may need to regear the thing to bring it down for steel. I haven't finished assembling it yet and haven't bought a metal cutting blade to see if 600 is too fast. Anyone here had experience with this sort of thing. I can't remember what speeds I can get away with. Anyone know where to get stacked pullies? The best part is they are on sale for $219, the cheapest I found for anything even close was 350ish and that was for a 1 speed Craftsman. The average price is 500 and up.

Ted, I have the Jet-HVBS-7MW.......it's highest speed is 260. Looking at a cutting chart, I don't think you want anything faster than 300!!!

Dino, yeah I got it running last night and 600 is just too fast. Looking at the pulley system, I came to the conclusion that the best thing for me to do is get a gear reduction type motor, or a slower motor. Other than that for $219 the thing is really a great deal. Very sturdy, cast iron table, the only bullshit thing is changing blades. You don't have hinges on the doors, just bolted on covers. Nothing some hinges and my TIG welder won't fix. I think I am going to pick up some bi-metal blades, the ones with the varied tooth placement. If I get the speed down to say 260ish in low, my top will be somewhere about 1195 and with a good blade like that I can still cut just about anything from stainless to wood.
