First real problem with my 12....??????
I've encountered the first real mechanical problem with my 12 while out riding today.
To try to accurately describe the problem...when I give the bike throttle, the tach and speedo climbs like normal, until about 7 grand and the tach just free revs and takes off. I've given all the play I can out of the clutch, since its cable, and it still is posing a problem with acceleration and free revving.
The bike tops out in 6th gear redlining at only 120mph. When I give it gas, the tach just uncontrollablly zips ahead with no acceleration on the speedo. It's like the bike has no power, at all, no matter how much gas I give it.
Full throttle and still no quickness, no quick power, like I've been accustomed to always having ready to dispense.
Is the problem my clutch or what? Is it covered under my warranty or are they going to try claiming it's normal "wear and tear." I'm going to try to take into the dealer this week, wanted to hear what it could be. Thanks for any help.
And if it matters...mine is an 02 model with about 12000 miles on it.

Sounds like a clutch to me.
As for the waranty I don't think the stealer
will spring for a new clutch.

Yeap the clutch is gone. Riding it can only lead to problems at this stage.
The fibers are going into the oil and can cause serious engine damage.l

I agree. Rebuild the clutch.

You need a new clutch! And with 12000 miles warranty isn't going to cover it.

Ok, now I definitely know for sure the problem thanks to everyone's feedback.
So now I ask, if it's just the clutch....should I order an aftermarket one or go for another stock one? Any chance it could be more then just the clutch that I'll have to worry about?
The Muzzy clutch kit is $300...ouch! For just a clutch?????

And I was going to ask if I need the Muzzys Performance Clutch Kit by itself or do I really need the billet clutch basket also?
Looking up various parts of the clutch system on Ron Ayers...it looks a lot more exspensive to get another stock one, yet I'm not sure what parts I need? Does it vary or is pretty standard which parts of the clutch will need to be replaced?
HUB-CLUTCH? $71
HOUSING-COMP-CLUTCH? $249
Looking at those two pieces alone, I think the Muzzys complete setup is a whole lot cheaper.

You would need to purchase the clutch hub and the friction plates and steel plates. And you still wouldn't have as reliable clutch as a muzzy clutch.

Just playing devil's advocate, unless it's in someway damaged, you wouldn't "have to" replace the hub. At least not in most cases. So, you could just replace the friction and steel plates for about $175 and even though this isn't "absolutly necessary", you could thrown in new OEM springs for around another $12. With shipping from Ron's, you'd probably get out for under $200.
Not to dis Ron, because those are GREAT prices for these parts, BUT... for $100 more, you could get "a new precision drilled clutch hub, hub bearing sleeve, friction plates, heavy-duty drive plates and heavy duty springs. " (quoted from Muzzy's site).
When it comes time to replace my plates, this is the route I'll go.

Hey Beans,
Just curious...how many miles do you have on your 12, and how nice are you to the clutch? I just want to get an idea of how long it took for your clutch to fail.

SERIOUSLY.....thanks to everyone for the great advice/help here in this situation. I will be going ahead and getting the Muzzy Performance Clutch Kit for my 12 and go for the install myself to save some money.
I drove probably about 80 miles on the bad clutch...of course now its parked until it's replaced? Did I do any damage to the engine in regards to the fiber getting into the oil too much already?
I just had the oil changed about 400 miles ago...do I need to replace the oil and filter again after I put the new clutch in?
What do you need to soak in oil the night before the clutch install??
To wannabe....I have just under 12000 miles on my 12. I am actually really conservative of a driver. I drive a lot, am hard on the clutch a couple times a month, nothing too bad.

How is the Muzzy Clutch Kit by the way? How many miles should I get out of it? How is the quality in the from the springs to the plates? Is it worth every penny or should I consider something else?

I just bought the Muzzy kit myself. I have the part sitting on my kitchen table right now. Let's see if I can expand a bit on what the kit consists of and how it helps. From what I've read from multiple boards, the fibers and steels are both stock. (i.e. the same stuff you can get from Kawasaki) The only difference is that the steels that are in Muzzy's kit are the thicker 1.6 mm type. The ones that come stock on the 12 are 1.4mm. The thicker steels are supposed to be able to take the heat better without warping.
The part that makes the kit worth it is the hub. (There's a bunch of archived threads here somewhere that show it all.) It's just like the stock one, but there are holes and channels drilled in various places to allow oil to lubricate the fibers. Just in case you didn't know, the 12's clutch is notorious for going bad due to oil starvation.
Here's a link to the threads:

I hope this helps..

when ya redo the clutch, make sure to clean the pick up screen for the oil pump, and change the oil and filter, had a buddy of mine lost a motor from the clutch fibers clogging the pick up screen and depriving the motor of oil...better safe than sorry

I had the same problem..My clutch went out at 1500 miles. I took it to my stealer and they talked to Kawasaki and they covered it. But with the miles you have on yours they are going to try to ram it in you. My stealer quoted me $650 for the complete stock clutch!

Actually the Muzzy has the 2mm steel plates. Stock are 1.6mm

Make sure you change the oil when you replace the clutch pack. All that material had to go somewhere.
