Stator gone wild

What would a stator look like when it is going bad? Most of the coils on mine are copper colored, but a few are darker than the rest.

Mine was : lead one 20v
Two 40v
Three 1-2 v
the first physical indication was one winding
darker than the rest......
Curiously enough ohmic value didn't
show a short or open
