Stupid CA emissions question...
Hey Guys,
I need your help. Can you guys help me identify this thing? The manual calls it a canister. It's on the page labeled "Evaporative Emission Control System (California Model Only.) It takes up way too much room in my trunk, and I want to get rid of it if I can. Here are my questions:
1. What the heck it this thing for?
2. Can I just disconnect it and plug the lines going into it without affecting the performance of the bike?

Evaporative Charcoal Cannister!
It stores the "Fumes" from your gas tank while the engine is off and returns them to the intake system when the engine is restarted later!
The only problem is that if you overfill your tank and raw fuel gets into the system, you will have an over rich problem that makes the bike very hard starting!
To remove it, you need the drawings of the 49 state model to make the changes!

Thanks Vincent. So, you're saying that removing it is not as easy as just plugging the lines? Bummer.
I don't suppose you have the 49 state model drawings handy, do you?

I removed the kleen, pluged the airbox and 1 of the lines to the fuel rail, left 2 lines hooked up to the fuel tank and 1 to the fuel rails and removed the canister.

The "Service Manual" Should have the drawings! I was out today changing Oil, replacing Batteries and adding Shims to the fuel distributor (in the BMW) today and van! My Wife is "GONNNNNE" with her new toy (The Mini "S") and I do not expect her back until night fall! (maybe)
I had to do this exact same thing to my ZX11! I bought one tube to make it "Stock looking"!!

Can someone be a bit more specific about this? (with pictures) I'm a total rook when it comes to this.

So if I move to California, is my 12 still legal to drive there without that CA stuff?

Vincent, yes, I do have a service manual, but I can't seem to find any drawings for the system. Maybe I'm just being blind. Can you point out a specific page for me?
Beans, technically, it will not be legal, but there is no way for the govt to check it. There is no law mandating smog checks on bikes in CA. (I hope it stays that way.)

Mine came off the first day, I went and bought the little bottle that the 48 state vehicle has. I believe I plugged off the R/H return vent on the tank. The chart to use is the online parts book at buykawasaki.com

Thanks, Vincent. I look forward to your post. In the meantime, all I could find on the parts list was this. I found no mention of the 49-state model.

I went to buykawasaki.com and selected parts manuals, then the 2000 zx12 then you are asked which model you want the cali spec or the 49 state spec. Went to fuel tank (in the 49 state spec and found the hose and the bottle). just go to the cali spec to see the setup differences.

You got it Ted. Removing the canister and installing the simple little hose and bottle should be a piece of cake.

OK, Ted. I feel like a total idiot here. I'm looking at the fuel tank drawing for the 49-state ZX-12. Would you be kind enough to tell me the ref # or part number of the hose & bottle you're talking about?
By 'bottle' do you mean that little plastic thingy that Kawasaki calls "BREATHER,FUEL TANK DRAIN?"

I looked at "1-37" and it showed the California Model, but I could not find the "Equal" view for the 49 State model!

Wannabe... look at the fuel tank diagram. part number 14069A that is the little plastic bottle that I beleive you are looking for. The diagram should give all of the hoses etc. Hopefully this answers your question.
