If Harley-Davidson should somehow win AMA Superbike, would you buy the bike? I ask because it seems the typical sportbike rider buys whatever machine is on top. Take Ducati, for example. Back when Carl Fogarty was kickin' butt, 916 sales spiked tremendously.

That's a big "IF" chief........
I won't humor you with telling you what Harley Davidson would have to produce to get my business. I ride a ZX12R for crissakes!!!!! I am NOT a typical sportbike rider, if I was I'd more than likely ride an R1 or a Gixxer 1k.
I'm a power junkie, wheelie freak, and always in search of twisties. I've rode almost all the sportbikes that are available today and nothing else made me grin like the 12 did. It's not the best handler, but it is damn good by anyone's standards, and it flat out hauls ass. You don't even have to push the bike hard to leave most of your riding buddies WAY back in the mirrors. Did I mention that the thing absolutely LOVES to be wheelied, a HUGE plus in my book. It's not THE bike to have according to the masses, but it is THE bike for me, and as far as I know it ain't been involved in WINNING anything. That is unless you count the fact that it would probably win "Most Shit-On Sportbike Ever" award.
I don't dig cruisers at this point and time. That's all Harley builds, and yes I'm including the V-Rod. If I buy anything with a V-twin in the near future it will say Ducati on the tank, and even that is very unlikely to happen.

Ninjaman--I respect your opinion. What do you think of Aprilias or the new Buell Firebolt?
I like sportbikes, but find them homologous, separated by qualities that are meaningful only on race track.
I like European sportbikes, particularly old Moto Guzzis. I'm currently looking for an old LeMans to restore.

Geoff, good question. I actually am quite impressed by the Aprilias and I know I'm not the only one. The new Buell Firebolt looks awesome IMHO and should be a dream in the tight stuff. I'm anxious to see some reviews of it because I'm interested in seeing how it handles, and also how that perimeter braking performs. Interesting stuff man.

If any of you ride in trafic like we have here in Austin TX you need a ZX12 just to survive! the ability to turn on a dime[ when a dellion {dell computer employee} decideds his/her job is more important then your life. or any of the other idiots that cant drive! you also need the speed of the 12 to get you out of situations your brakes cant.a harly worshiper asked, how could I ride all bunched up like that? isnt it uncomfortable? I said well its not like ridin a lazyboy down the street, but if it were I would be even more uncomfortable. greazy biker says HUH? I told him ridin on your ass and not your feet leaves you wide open to disaster how the hell are you going to act react or preact sittin on your ass!cruisers got there place, parked, or rode up & down your private driveway! by NO means were they made to interact with traffic! theres always the last resort jump factor built into every sport bike, I know I can clear a car from the position I ride in, do that from a cruiser!

MO--Sportbikes certainly offer an advantage when it comes to braking and maneuverability. However, these qualities are no replacement for rider skill.
A post I recently saw in the Cycle World forum asked for ways to hop up a sportbike for under $500. The best advice dude received was to attend a racing school. I've got to believe the skills one can use on a closed course would help on the street, too.

rider skill is the most important factor in staying alive on the streets. but using your skills on a bike equivalent to haveing one hand tied behind your back?
