Off topic ... computer / brower problem...

driving me totally nuts... IE werks, mozilla and kazaa cant establish a network connection... what gives? Has IE somehow locked up my system so that I cant use anything other than their crap?

Serious input only please... a solution would be much appreciated.

I dumped my KaZaA. I think it was interfering with my PC and it loads a ton of spyware onto the PC that is running it.

Did you just upgrade to IE 6?

I have seen a lot of issues with IE 6, but I cant say that this is the cause for sure. I would have to Look into it further.

Did you check the backup my files box during the installation of the service pack? If you did you can revert back, if not you are screwed.

Doubt it's an update problem but I'll ask, did you apply service to the OS or the browser ?

Go to a command prompt and ping a known address and see if it can resolve, like "ping bikeland.org"

I assume this is a home thing and when you say firewall you're talking about some DSL or cable box and not a "real" firewall product ?

FYI pat830, kazaalite doesn't do spyware.

no...it's a real firewall.... and as I said before ie and ftp and all of my other apps work... mozilla and kazaa lite wont... even if I bypass the firewall... they run on my other machines... just not the one I want them to run on.

If it's XP SP1 try this to fix Kazaa:

Right click on the program file (the executable), then select the compatibility tab.

Check the box labeled "Run this program in Compatibility Mode for" and select Windows 98/ME from the dropdown menu.

Then click "apply" and then ok.

Try to run kazaa again.

I saw that, but you didn't specify the OS so I had to guess. If that fixed the kazaa problem then I could tell you how to fix the others. There is a known issue with XP SP1 and W2K SP3, I'll have to look on 98 because I didn't expect to see that OS getting a new service pack.

You can turn off the spyware.. Goto start, hit run, type in msconfig, click startup tab and clean out the spyware.... This site will help tell you what you can eliminate stuff you don't need to free up systems resources...

cleaned your registry lately?

Try window washer or EasyCleaner.

you never know what whacky things might happen with a misguided registry.
