Welding Cast?
I bought a wrecked bike for parts and see that the only damage to the frame is the tab that the fairing stay mounts to on the neck is busted off.Can this be welded back on?Is this cast alum or steel?I wanted to have this frame racked if I could.

I have always been afraid to weld on the frame. So I usally drill and tap or drill and put a thread sert in. Not sure if that works in this application, but if it does it sure beats the heck out of welding!

I agree with not enjoying the idea of welding on the frame but in this case there is not enough left to work with.It is almost broke clean off+welding will have to be done anyway to rack it.

At the risk of sounding like a nut - (i am - but thats another story) if it isn't a highly stressed part, you could always try an epoxy - JB weld or Cold weld or heat resistant stuff. They have some neat shite out there now a days. Of course you have to decide if it will look the part afterwards. Some of the epoxy's are good to 3000 psi and more of shear strength.

Weld it, or sell it to me so i can.
Welding is the only true fix, but probably not at the muffler shop.

Cast will weld nicely IF you get a good experianced welder to do the job, preferrably with a tig machine and not a spool gun. The tig gives much better control of the weld. A good welder will preheat the area and control the cooling also.

Welding the frame is not a big deal, as Ozzy says a TIG (GTAW) is the proper way to repair it. The best thing is to send the frame to a shop that specializes in frame straightining and have it repaired and checked for straightness. If it is only a tab just take it to the local welding shop and have it replaced. This is why I have a TIG in my garage, as a matter of fact I just wired it up a couple of weekends ago.

That is the only thing wrong with the frame on my first 12 after I wrecked it. Welded it, painted it, and it was ready to go. Just an inherent weak spot on the front of the 12 frame. Better that tab to break than the frame neck, huh?

If Cowboy is taking about what I think he is. Its a rectangular shaped piece that is welded vertically against the front of the steering head. Its crossdrilled for the bolt to pass thru and hold the fairing bracket. It seems to be a pretty common thing for them to get broken off on wrecked 12R's. A friend had that was broken and he welded it back on. It doesn't seem to be a big deal with the proper equipment.
