the impossible: a NEW clutch question
I have replaced so many clutch packs I am on Ron Ayers' "clutch of the month club" and I just prepped another set of fibers & steels.
It occurred to me that maybe there is an easier way to clean the goo off then steels than the way I have been doing it.
I have been:
1.soaking the steels in a bowl of rubbing alcohol, then
2. "cleaning" with a scotch brite pad,
3. rinsing with alcohol,
4. drying, then
5. plunking em in oil along with the 11 fibers,
6. soaking over night, then
7. bagging the set up (slopping a bit of oil in the baggie) for when they are needed.
who has a less anal, just as effective method?

You can not over soak the fiber! BUT On the steel, why are you using anything other than Brake Cleaner! (Of course in the Green can like from the Auto Zone!! Take a Paper towel and fold it in half then half twice more wet with the cleaner and then wipe the steel plates keep refolding the paper towel until you need a new one! Then spray off the plates and then wipe dry with another towel! Now you are ready to put them in oil (Unless you want to Bead Blast them! It will not give better traction, but may give longer life because of more oil being retained!) then dip in the oil!@

Vince, thx for the info
I am using rubbing alcohol because the 1st Muzzy clutch kit I bought said to. Now I am looking for an easy way.
If brake cleaner is better, so be it. YOU are one o' those guys whose advice I take with no second guessing.
BTW: you looked pretty stylish in the Maxton pix. Great idea for a "naked bike"!!!!!!

brake clean works great. And I bead blast them also when I am in a shop with a bead blaster. I sparay them down with brake clean and blow them dry with an air nozzel.
Has anyone tried a Barnett clutch pack? Barnet buildt us a special clutch pac (steels and fibers) for my HRC RC51 Superbike. The bike ate stock clutches like candy. One practice or race and it was over. Two starts max. The Barnet Carbon fiber unit that Velasco had them build is like the Ever Ready bunny, keeps going and going.

YCIS,
a few mo ago, I bought an orbital sander to clean the old steels. Even with fine paper it took off enough meat to lower my stack height more than I like. Sandblasting may not be as bad; try it an tell us what happens.
(wanna buy a used orbital sander?)

I use contact cleaner or lacquer thinner (got 55 gals of an "special blend" at work) on the steels. Hey, but what do I know? I'm still using the same steels and fibers that came with the bike 37K miles ago. I just take my clutch apart during oil changes to entertain myself. Clean the fibers with contact cleaner (never use the thinner) and use either the contact cleaner or the thinner on the steels, soak them in oil and put it back together.

I bead blast mine (like VH said) and then clean them real good to remove all the dust and grit. Works good.

Just looked at mine last night. Everything looked pretty much the same as it did when I assembled the motor 5k ago. I did get rid of the 4 thin steels and replaced them with thick ones to get my stack height where I wanted it. I wound up using a thin steel back to back with a thick one.

I always use acetone then I use the same motor oil I use in the bike. A dry clutch is a bad thing. If you run the clutch dry even one time it will glaze and you are toast. Also if the surface of the steels is too rough it will abraze the fibres and glaze. A wet clutch means just that....wet. It is a combination of surface area and pressure that makes it work correctly, NOT artificially induced friction. This clutch will bottom if it wears too much, then slip then heat then burn out its oil. Also if your clutch dries out it will start a cycle of sticktion then slip, then stick and pow the basket is toast. By making the steels too abrasive you will dig into the fibers, the oil film gets wiped away it can't maintain its bond, and will start to boil off the surface. Want to keep you clutch going??? Smooth steels, good fibres, plenty of oil, PLENTY OF STACK HEIGHT, and plenty of pressure.

Correct Ted! Bead Blasting dents the surface and takes the glaze off the plates! "Don't be scared"!! to use soap and water (only after bead blasting) to clean the plates and a bristle Brush like for your hands! You really want all of those beads "GONE"!! Then break clean (Cheaper and now safer that Contact cleaner!) "Please only use Green cans" I like the cheap stuff at AutoZone the smell will not kill you as fast and the Chemical (Forever long name) will not kill your liver as fast! Like Ted said use the "SAME" (Read expensive) Oil you use in your engine to soak them! I want 24 hours "AT LEAST" Before I install them!
Kawasaki had original clutch problems from the bike sitting so long before sale that they squeezed the oil out of the pack and made the clutch grab and shutter when taking off!
TB & YCIS are "BAD" The last straw was the Pic of my rag van! I am presonally going to mention Both of them "by name" next prayer!!

I'm a bit concerned with bead blasting. It will leave too many "dents" and the places that aren't dented will act as wipers filling the dents and breaking down the film. Look at a new plate(it has been a while for me) but they are very smooth with just a few divits in them to hold oil.
