Maxton Report

All I can say is this was a very humbling experience. Ill post some pics later...but never being there before and seeing the track for the first time was quite unsettling. Im sure most of you have seen the old imeson runways....after years of no upkeep...the concrete is cracked and has weeds growing up through it...well...maxton is very similar to this....I really expected a nice paved surface to run on...but not a chance. To make matters worse...in order to achieve the full mile distance and have enough of a shutdown area...you actually start on an angled taxiway and make a nice dogleg turn to the right for the first 1/4 mile....then the rest of the track is a straight (and somewhat rough) ride to the timing lights at the finish line. Basically they have two sets of lights...132 feet apart at the end of the mile and they calculate your speed based on how long it took you to pass through that 132foot area. Now we get to the shutdown area. There are two turnoffs for the shutdown area...the first is less than 1/4 mile after the finish so if you are traveling over 150ish mph...you have no shot of making it. The second turn off is over a mile down the runway...but sadly..this part of the track is in MUCH worse shape than the rest...in some areas there are 100' sections of hardpacked gravel to cover the potholes.

Anyway....this weekend we were fighting a 10 - 15mph headwind and everyones times were down about that speed. Needless to say I was disappointed. after the first 3 qualifying runs of 122mph, 162mph and 172 mph (basically you have to make 3 runs at 125/150/175 to get your license) I made my first nitrous run and it became very obvious that I completely underestimated the power required to pull the gearing we selected for this race. The bike would not pull past 10k rpm and I crossed the line at a miserable 177mph. Happened to have a 1 tooth larger sprocket available and put that on to run 180mph for the last run of the day. We really ran out of time due to an annoying electrical problem that didnt get fixed till way late on the first day.

Anyway...this is a helluva lot harder than I thought...and I cannot wait to go back next year !!!

As a comparison...some of the fastest vehicles (all bikes) were running the following:

Turbo Hayabusa (450hp) 217mph (normally 230+mph)
Turbo ZX11 (350hp) 209mph
Bbuttload of other turbo busas around 300hp 200-205mph

1361/Nitrous ZX12R (250hp) 198mph/201mph

most other streetbikes were running in the 170 - 190 range depending on mods.

This really was a cool event...just wish the track was in better shape.

Can read more about it here www.ecta-lsr.com

Also It was cool to meet Bergie/Vincent/Dan/ and all the other ZX12 Riders there...Im sure they will chime in too!

Sounds cool Bri, I'd like to go to that one of these days. Too bad you can't run in both directions. I wonder what it takes to enter at Bonneville?

The wind was strong. Everyone was between 5 and 12 mph off because of it. I went 194 several times then laid down a 198 and change on Sunday. It was awesome to meet everyone in person, we all had a great time. I think a lot of the 1st timers gained new respect for the "200 mph" mark at Maxton, and unless you've actually been there and done that they just don't understand. I've decided to go back in October so hopefully we'll see you all again soon!

My most dangerous moment was the run I made with the brake pads seperated from the calipers. DON'T DO IT! I spread the pads to try and pickup MPH thinking a squeeze or two would pump up the lever across the line, NOPE! Shit man I freeked when I passed the first turn at 170 still pumping the lever like seven times! I was actually talking out loud to my bike "C'mon baby" because all I could picture was the sand trap that was coming up quick on the bottom end of the shutdown area!! Well it all turned out good the lever came back and I got on the brakes in time to survive but I don't recommend trying this to anyone..

Make sure you check my website later this week, I have AWESOME VIDEO including an helmet cam run of 194 mph at Maxton!

Wait until you see the videos they are being uploaded to my site as they are completed. I started with the helmet cam run, although the audio didn't come out I just dubbed some music over it instead... Oh in case you were wondering it takes approximately 26 seconds to go from 0 to 194 mph in one mile at least on my bike anyway..

We had a great time also. It was a pleasure meeting everyone from the board. This high speed thing is addicting !! Too bad we had such strong head winds or I think some records would have fallen.

We took three 12's with us. Here are our best times into the wind:

1361 w/muzzy pipe and pump gas : 201 mph

stock 12 w/ muzzy pipe and nutec fuel : 197 mph

stock 12 w/ akro pipe and nutec fuel : 195 mph

great vid! but i spent the whoel damn thing tiltin my head tryin to straighten it out, & movin to the right tryin to see thru the middle of the windscreen. was rather frustrating cause i wasnt gettin anywhere but ya know it's fiunny how ya really dont feel like yer goin all that fast when yer doin a top end run. people always give ya the "holy shit" look, but it really aint a big deal. guess its just cause ya only do it in a place where its wide open & u have a big ass straight. nothin seems fast on the right road.

Freek!! Three things! Now you know why TB and I went through hell to get a Gustafsson doubble Bubble (No lines or distorsion) 2nd, the "LOOK" Trust me, when you are Accelerating as fast as possible with seenery going past, you really feel the speed! 3rd, you must not have watched carefully! There is a right hand turn at about 120 mph and you see that white line, that is because the course has so many pot holes, weeds, patches and a "Sand Trap"! Until you ride there really fast, you have no idea of how bad a place it is! I personally think you need to go there and make the runs and get a license! Then come back and let us know just how little it takes to do this! "OK"!!
