Poll Question:
What rear shock do you use?
As many know the rear shock leaves a lot to be desired for anyone heavier than Joe Average 150lb. 5'8" rider. I'm really curious what (if anything) you all have done to your rear shock.
Replacement?
Re-valved / Re-worked?
Nothing?
What?
Any additional details appreciated. If your mod/shock brand is not listed, please list w/details: price, adjustments, etc.

Penske shock with remote reservoir for me. 6" arm and my fat ass made the stocker too soft. about $800

I worked a deal between Kawasaki and My dealer! When your shock goes bad, Kawasaki Pays the dealer $400 to replace the shock (Parts and Labor) Dealer price on an Ohlins is $800! Have the dealer give you the shock for $400 and you install it! SInce I knew the dealer, we went 50/50 and I got mine for $200! Nothing like the Hydraulic controlled spring! I will report later, but as bad as the course was at Maxton, The bike was smooth and stable!

I think the best compromise between quality/price is the Ohlins. You can get it for less than a grand, it's got the remote preload adjuster, and Ohlins quality. Now Harry did the big daddy Penske, and I gots respect for a man that knows what he wants, and doesn't scrimp out and get the cheapy Penske.

I got an OHLINS for my OH2. Nice quality. It was a matter of money on this purchase. Same features as the big $$ Penske for 1/2 the price

I like my Ohlins. And I will say it again, when you go to the races find out how many of the guys running PENSKEs actually paid for them. PENSKE makes a hell of a good rear shock. I don't believe it is any better then an Ohlins.
I know many racers out there that paid for their Ohlins and the racers I know personally with Penskes are sponsored by them or someone either bought it for them or gave them a monstor deal.
Just my two cents worth.

The voting has been slower than I thought, but it appears a large majority (57%) likes the Ohlins...

Your question is a bit of a puzzle. And I guess it is merely a question as you have asked if there is a unanamous best rear shock. Kind of difficult to get a unanamous decission since there are various opinions.
A couple of years ago when Hayden and the boys were on CBR 600s they were struggling with the Showa suspension. Roberts wasn't plauged with the same handling problems on his Erion bike that just happen to have Ohlin's. as I remeber it, Honda gave the HRC team permission to run Ohlins and Nickey managed to pull a #1 plate out of it.
Of course the truth is nonw of us here ride well enough to push the Ohlin or Penske to it's limit. I can only say that I have had my factory shock revalved and it was an improvement but nearly as nice as the Ohlins. I have no real experience with the Penske on my own machine.
