Carrillo rod clearance on 1361???

Who was it??? that used Carrillo rods in a 1361???

I know how I "want to" clearance the rod for the starter gear but...would like to know how it has been done by other people???

For the record...if you install Carrillo rods in the 02-ZX12R you need to use the early model (00-01) rod bearings because they ARE different and the rods that I got are made for the early Model bearings

Zhooligan has carillos in his 1361. Prob is interference with the starter gear. The solution was shimming everything over a small amount, then it cleared.

Haven't heard of any numbers, other than the 105/103 numbers for the 1270.

Mikael,
I used 105/100 on the 1361

Like KC said, do youself a favor and get the billet basket. Good insurance and it looks cool!

When I built my 1347, I put the billet basket and Muzzy clutch on it. Although I didn't get to make that many runs down the strip (prolly two dozen) it still felt great, and I would definately recommend it for a stroked/bored motor.

Shimming the torq limiter gear is the hard part...there aren't any shims to take out...somthing has to be machined in order to move the gear over (on THIS motor)...
I'm not done yet...or I'd tell you how I did it...

Just had a chance to review this thread.....

I have the carillos in my 1361. We had to shim the starter over and frankly Velasco also had to bevel the starter gear slightly as well. he had to also do some grinding in some other spots to insure clearance. I would suggest if you are putting Carillos in your 1361 motors (strokers) you might want to give Mike Velasco a call at MVR. I paniced when he started assembling the egine and the crank wouldn't rotate. Mike just handled it and it works great.

When I used the Falicons in my 1340, I took the starter drive gear, chucked it in a lathe and simply with a file, took about half the width of the teeth off at about a 45 deg angle about 1mm deep at the "corner" of the tooth.Still plenty of engagement and the "contact point" (the pitch circle) of the gear is not touched. BTW- the interference is from the bolt head, not the rod itself.

Doug is correct the intereference with the Carillos is some of the bolt heads not actually the rod itself.

Thank you guys...
I have just about got this deal done (would BE done but...been a Dyno-n FOOL at work all week last week...

I DID machine (bevel) the gear but I was afraid to machine it "half way off" (the boss was also)... so I am also machining the case for the gear to be moved over

JFYI...it's not a rod bolt clearance issue...it's the big end of the rod itself...

Carrillo rods

Anybody

How much weight do the Carrillo rods save over stock?
Is there any mod that would cause you to recommend sticking w/ the stockers on a 1361?
I know the Carrillo rods are lighter and stronger, but I've also read that the issue with the stockers in the end cap bolts t/f?

Not only are the rods stronger and lighter, the rod connection bolts are bigger and stronger as well. I don't remember the weght savings, but
swft posted some picks of the rods with weights etc. about 4 months ago.

Kevin, also double check the thickness of the case after you machine enough to clear particularly around the #4 on the bottom, where the bolt scrapes.!!! May need to be reinforced there, and also around #1 on the back once it clears. You don't need to shim the starter gear. Plenty of teeth left for the starter.
You will also have to machine the counterbalancer.........

What counterbalencer? If you are spending the money to have a 1361 motor spend the bucks to balnace the engine and throw the counterbalancer away. Less rotating mass. My bike is as smooth now without it as it was with it at least thats what my hands and butt remeber!!!

Muzzys has a nice anodized aluminum balancer "eliminator" plug that makes this an easy deal.
