Smoke Checked my Clutch last night!
I was at the drag strip last night and was not really letting the clutch cool off enough between runs.I was talking to dean about ideas to improve my 60ft time.He suggested I might try slipping my clutch more to try and launch harder. So that's what I did. When I got back to the area I wanted to stop the clutch wouldn't release.I figured it just got hot and if I let it cool it would release. So I let it cool some and tried it and it was still dragging some but I could launch off the line ok.Got back after the run and it was grabbing again.I tried it today and after I ran it awhile it did the same thing. So I start taking it apart.I start removing the steels and fibers and about 1/2 way in the pack I couldn't budge a steel .I thought WTF? So I removed the muzzy modified hub with the steels/fibres on it . One of the steels had Galled/Welded itself onto the hub! I had to beat the fucker off enough so that I could take my high speed grinder with a cutoff wheel and cut it in half to remove it.Has anybody else had this problem? My clutch had gotten hotter than a fresh fucked fox in a forest fire. Most of the plates were almost black.so I put more plates in and assembled it and it seems to work ok now.

I feel for ya man!!
Dude Ive had that happen a few times, warped a steel so bad that I had to yank the damn thing out!! it sucks, never had to cut one out. but definatly had to yank one out with an allen wrench and a pair of vice grips!!! it sucked! and ya man you have got to let that thing cool between rounds!! us bigger guys it takes more to get that thing moving ask entropy also. shoot I went through 5 clutches this year and 5 last year! I need a clutch sponsor!!!!! about 10 sets should get me through the year ok..

I FEEL YOUR PAIN MAN!
Dude, even my light ass had that happen once!!! Funny, like Mike, I used an allen wrench to get mine out too! But, unlike you, I have about 6-7, maybe 8 of those fookers that were stuck like a mofo. They did NOT want to come out!
It was about 2-3 weeks after I just put in the Muzzy Hub and I was like WTF!! I thought I had reeaallly torn things up. Ain't cool when the clutch, don't keep the bike from moving!!
So, since then, I've been doing some things, and taking much better care of my plates. Expensive fuckin' lesson. It took me about 3 sets until I worked out a pattern and tricks for cooling the plates.

YEEEup...
The last couple times we went out with a "marginal clutch" I had to "use some force" to get a couple of the steels off the hub... Nothing like your deal though Harry...
I wanted to slap you up-side-the-head LAST WEEK when you weren't letting your bike cool enough but...I didn't want to get my ass kicked
I KNEW you would see the light (burn plates) and get the idea ...

I burned the stock clutch & cracked the basket. got the muzzy billet & clutch went to the track & burned it. when I took it apart I saw it was dry [with the muzzy oil fix\. so I put a big ole groove in the clutch release rod[someone elses idea] but not quite to the end so you only loose oil presure when the clutch is pulled in, or rod pulled out[no load]I mean the oil spews especially with the clutch pulled in [exposes more of the groove]so on the ride back up the track I pull in the clutch and give the throttle a blurp or ten then let it run a few minutes with the fan on [ manual switch with 30 amp relay direct from batt fan pulls harder and with ign off] kill the ign leave fan on 2 or4 min. start eng. pull in clutch to circulate oil repeat if needed. I ben to the track 10? times with the sanded clean muzzy clutch and going again same clutch but then again Im only going 10.1 @ 141mph wheelie monster! I thought about putting a electric oil pump push the oil thru separate oil cooler and directly on to clutch pack?

tough love - black steels!
As MadMike noted, I have had similar experiences like Harry's. Warped steels, difficult to pull out. But never had to cut any out; Harry is EXTREME!
When I abuse the clutch like that I get my best ET's, but on Mon morning I have to call Ron Ayers for another couple sets of plates. I have had some of my quickest passes after sitting at the stage light with the front brake on because the clutch wouldn't disengage fully. This is NOT advised
My next test will be with a 17/50 or 17/51 to see if I can throw away the clutch faster and not have to slip it so much.
