Blow a fuse!

Hey all,

My 2002 ZX12R keeps blowing its 10amp starter fuse!?

The guy at my local garage got it going last Monday evening, then I drove it home, switched it off, then went to start it again and it blew the same fuse! So its gone back to him again in the back of a van since last night.

Any ideas what is causing this to happen? He told me that inside the starter button all seems okay. And it only blows when I go to press this. The power to the clocks goes and the engine doesnt make a sound. But my lights still work and my battery is perfect.

Any advice would be great,
Thanks.

It sounds like you have a short to ground somewhere in your starting system, I would bet that you have a wire grounded out somewhere in your starting system or a internal starter cocern causing a short. The fuse blowing when you try and apply voltage to the circuit is a clear indicator of a short to ground somewhere in your starting system.

right.. unplug your solenoid and meter it for resistance.. not sure tho what the resistance should be.. i'm sure KZ Scott or Entropy ot Tim knows that..

anyway, if you've got resistance, that rules it out right there.. if theres 0 ohms, the coil is shorted.. you can always jump 12V to the coil to see it the bike turns over if you're feeling brave.. be aware tho that if the bikes in gear, bad shit will happen, or if the coil IS shorted, you'll melt your jump leads or get a small arc blast in your face.

moving to the harness.. (horrible assumption warning..)

i want to say (having only ever looked at the wiring schematics and not having any real experience on a 12-R ) that it should be like my 7. the push button controls a relay that controls a relay.

what needs to be seperated is which control circuit is faulting out.

again.. assuming (sorry) that you've got a junction box like 90% of the rest of the kawi lineup of this vintage, you can pull the connector there at the J box and test for continuity to ground from the power in to the relay in the J box, and power out from the J box to the solenoid.

normally those kinda things are blatantly obvious and are an easy fix.. may not be right out there.. might be kinda hidden, but "normally" it's an external problem like abrasion or insulation brakdown (heat, chemicals, friction)

i thought i had the manual on PDF but it appears i do not, otherwise i would have posted a much more concise and usable answer.

but like i said tho, from what i gathered over the years thru everyone elses posts, you've got the same setup i do... pushbutton to J box.. j box controls solenoid.

redundant control system.

good luck! (and again, sorry i'm kinda guessing here, but as an electrical engineer, i thought i could add a tiny bit of something)
