Hi Phil.
I just had my 1994 (yellow) Vmax dyno-ed last month. Here in Phoenix, on a damn hot afternoon, I got 110 rear wheel hp. All I have are SuperTrapp slip on mufflers. I have the coolest fix for the stupid Corbin seat/gas filler nightmare, if you or your buddy cares...

I know that the first couple of years the V-max came out the horsepower was higher than it is now. Apparebtly there were issues with too much horsepower so they detuned it. So the Mr. Max being sold these days is down something like 20 horsepower or so from what my feeble memory recalls.

Stock out of the box varies between 110 and 115 rwhp.
The '85 orignial did report some phenomenal No.s (not by 20 though)but no one seems to have been able to reproduce them.
Mine currently dynoes at 157 hp + 100 ft-lbs of torque but then its been tweeked.

I remember an issue of CYCLE magazine back in '85 where they were doing a comparison of the "hot" bikes currently on the market. There were 6 or 7 bikes in the test - V-max, FJ1100, 900 Ninja and the GS1150 were definitely among them. The V-max tested at 119 rwhp - the biggest number I can ever remember seeing for a stocker. Probably still have that magazine around here somewhere!!

...I just love the sound of a Supertrapp piped V-Max...like a tweaked small-block Chevy...all lumpy cammed idle and shit...not to mention the sound at full chat...man, that's a motor waiting for the right chassis to happen, yes?...can you say the-shit-kickinest-factory-fat-tired-meanest-quickest-and-fastest-power-cruiser of all time?...maybe you could...I hope Yamaha sees the light one day to build it...I'll be the first in line...make it chain-drive, tho...I wanna go quicker

Hehe, I used to laugh at the guys on the Maxes. That bike was always the equivalent of the 60s muscle cars to me. Boiling that dinky rear tire and 1st-2nd gear chirps always had me tickled. Fun bikes to ride, but I didnt want to own one. My favorite moment was when I was ~22yrs old. I raced the "king of the streets" who happened to own a Vmax. I got out on him on my 750 and never looked back...lol. He tried me 3 times and lost even more ever time we ran...hehe.

He must have been dragging his feet. The Vmax will run in the high 10's low 11's, unless your 750 had nitrous or was turbo charged, I don't know a 750 that will do that.

Uh, the only maxes Ive seen run 10s were ones "magically blessed" by PeeWee Gleason...or they have $5k or more invested in them. Without a chain conversion, I cant see how you can launch them consistently. Shaft drive is bitch!
Yes my 750 is turbocharged! It had 135hp at the time.

Try this topic on the vmax list:

I'm sure the guys will give you an earful regarding 1/4 mile times for the Vamx.
I've seen lots of guys on stock (or nearly)maxs launch with no problem.

local V-MAX at the drag strip finnally got under the 12's after putting on exhaust, carb kit, K&N and top off the air box, just too much weight and revs too slow, fun but not that fast

Oh yeah, almost forgot, near the back of this months Motorcyclist magazine there is a page with specs on it for a bunch of bikes and I think the max was on the list. Don't have the rag here but check it out, as it lists a lot of good info on a bunch of bikes

Don't be talkin bad about the max. It is kind of like the original Z1 900. A legend. I have talked to tons of guys that have owned one or the other or have friends that did. And they are both spoken about in similar fashion. Blazing fast, scarey fast, plaid fast (from space balls, a great movie!) 150, 160 even higher speeds then that. I am usually trembling with fear after just talking about them! Of course I do remeber my brand new 1973 Orange Z1 900 and it is true it whacked every bike I came across at the time, but I could only get it to about a 120 on the speedo, time did not stand still or anything else like that. Maybe legends are slightly blown out of proprtion!
Kind of like the old mopars from the 60's that did 150 plus. I beleive I may have figured out where all of this came from. Canada and Kilometers!!

Z, no disrespect intended, but when I started getting interested in fast bikes, the older gents always had Maxes and were quite snobbish.
To me they were heavy and odd bikes. Just not to my liking. My first street races were against one of those "84s" with all the power. Sounded like a built Mopar. They just stopped being "mystical" to me when I waxed a highly modified one, fairly easily.
I always thought the FZR1000 was much stronger! Even today, those bikes will give a 12 or Busa a run for the money from a roll! 20valves makes for a hell of a midrange

1985 was the first year model for the V-Max. [Yeah, I realize MOST of you know that!] I remember going up against one in '85 (or maybe '86?) at the dragstrip. I was on my '84 900 Ninja and I will admit I was intimidated at first. After all, the V-Max was supposed to be the KING of the quarter-mile and easily blow my little 900 away, right? This guy had some kind of aftermarket exhaust, a small slick on the back and wheelie bars. All I had on the 900 was a Yosh 4-into-1 street exhaust system and a K&N Stage III Intake Performance Kit. Raced him twice and I was very surprised when we went through the traps about a bike-length apart both times. [I think HE was even more surprised!!] Yeah, he won both races --- but not by much!

Hey Turbo... I totally understand and agree. I was being a smart ass above. So much of the mystic around the V-max is myth. The guys who like them can have fun with them. To each his own. My point about the Z1 was that everyone is always saying how fast they were when they either don't have a clue of the truth or they are as full of crap as a christmas goose. They did a 120 on a good day.
What I will say is on the drag strip a good drag racer may in fact beat me because of his skil on the built V-max. But a skilled guy on my 12 would be another story.

...years ago, when I had an 89'FZR100, a friend of mine had one, too, AND an 89' V-Max...the FZRs were fantastic (compared to other big-bores at the time)...I got to ride the V-MAx on occassion...piped, jetted, tuned...it was a neat bike...even neater sounding ...weird jacking or pogo-ing at the rear under acceleration...but oh what a cool ride when riding it within its design purpose...pretty quick for a shafty...like I said, an engine waiting for the right CHAIN-DRIVE chassis to happen ...the V-Rod or any other power-cruiser has nothing on the MadMax....IMHO, or course

I didn't mean to bad mouth the V-MAX, the bike, like all others has its place but it is not any kinda horsepower king, though "V BOOST" is really cool when it comes on, but at a rated 118.5 hp its not setting the world on fire given the weight and shaft drive. I still own and ride a KZ900, mostly at the drag strip anymore, and it will run away from the local '02 V-MAX with no problems. The guy that owns the MAX is in his 60's and going through a 3rd childhood and just loves the thing but what it needs is a shot of 21st century techno, fuel injection, chain drive, 180 hp plus, then we would really have a MAX!!!

My buddies had a Dale Walker Pipe( the best pipe for a max in my opinion) and was jetted with the V boost on all the time. 129HP I think. Ran 11.30's with his non riding ass on it. I will say there are no fast maxes around here but one. Lotsa 12 second ones. one 9.00 Max
