I'm dying here!

ARRRGH! I'm stuck in motorcycle HELL! I'm at a four day business conference at South Padre Island. What could be so bad about that? A LOT! Here's are a few reasons why...

1. I will "lose" another weekend of great riding weather.

So why didn't I just bring my bike?

2. The biggest change in elevation was probably the speed bumps at the airport.

3. I have never see flatter or straighter roads in my entire life.

4. Texas highway 100 to South Padre goes dozens of miles without a single hint of a curve or elevation change.

5. Some parts of this landing strip of a highway have a posted speed limit of THIRTY FIVE MILES PER HOUR! ARGH!

Though this would likely be a nirvana for you high speed/top end guys, this is a twisty lover's HELL! If I had brought my bike, within six hours, I'd either be dead or in jail for a long, long time.

To make matters worse, the evening hospitality suites are filled with drunk advertising agency posers and squids. All of them sittin' around talkin' all kinds of stupid smack and bench racing. Advertising smack of course. UGH!

Wish ya'll were here (and I was home riding twisties)!

Get a grip, dudes! Spring Break has long since past. All the young babes have gone home and are sitting in classrooms. The only thing you'll see on the beaches at this time of year makes you wonder if they really did outlaw whaling in these parts. "Things" that really shouldn't combine spandex and sunlight. It's either that or folks that look like the poster child for Red Lobster. Why do you think they call it the "off season"? It ain't "get off", it's "turn off".

DP, what rent a Harley? Man, there are just some things I won't be seen in public doing. I do have some "standards"! They do even have a "motorcycle" catagory in the phone book! Nothing. No dealers, rentals or anything!

MM, keep dreamin' dude. It ain't two miles.... it's TWENTY! Sure it's at sea level, but check out the conditions for the past 5 hours...

Time/Temp/Heat Index/RH%/BP
9am 74 82 100 29.89
10am 78 91 92 29.90
11am 84 100 71 29.90
12pm 88 108 65 29.89
1pm 89 104 60 29.87
2pm 89 103 60 29.85

Hardly the best of conditions for high speed runs, eh? Even though the temps go down at night (low - 72), the humidity gets even worse (95+%). It's as if your (and the bike) are being strangled by sweaty hands. Shit, I sweat more going to the coke machine then I do after a day's ride in full leathers. Arkansas is humid (very humid), but not like this. This is a sweaty, smothering type of humidity. It must be the salt water. I'm sure the salt in the air is real good on bikes too!

It's hell, I'm tellin' ya! PURE HELL!

Red,
I don't guess that I should mention blasting the Cherahola yesterday with them Yankee fellers, or about their 450 mile daily rides through the mountains! The core group Deal Gappers missed you, I believe their cabin is shrinking.
Besides, in the above picture you look tanned and fit (kinda).
Come see us next Spring 'cause you are sorely missed.

Dan, not as much as I miss being there!

z, From my room on the second floor... I can see the curvature (sp?) of the frikkin' earth. ARRGH!

It's another hot and muggy day here. I'm takin' more showers and changin' more clothes then a hooker. at least today is the last full day. To make matters worse, the rest of the conference events are scheduled to be outside. Damn! Haven't I suffered enough?

I did see an 9R and a R1 in the parking lot. I just shook my head and mumbled... Why? A Busa or a Blackbird, maybe, but a R1? What a waste.

Tomorrow, starting at 11 am, I get to "enjoy" the 45+ minute shuttle ride on the longest, straightest, flatest highway known to "elk kind". Only to be followed with a 1 1/2 hour wait for my flight out of the "busy" airport in Harlingen, TX. Thank God I took Dave in Daytona's advice and brought a few DVDs with me. At least I can watch Shrek while I wait.

All this only to arrive home too late to go for any kind of serious ride. I guess I could tear up the backyard with the ole KDX.

I can remember to this day running across Texas (from Orlando to San Diego) back in 1973 and 74 and seeing the long Texas highway in front of me. It was almost hypnotic. It (the highway) seemed as flat and straight as possible. The only variable was occasionaly a semi would appear out of no where because while the roads have few bends they do occasionally have a dip!!! And of course there was masssive heat in the summer months!!

Sure, E Texas is flat, great for top end runs and 1/4 mi. Take what you can get; and winter is coming with low humidity nice temps; HP weather!!!

Naw... my travellin' hell ended years ago and even then, it wouldn't hold a candle to either of ya'll. BTW Dave, I preferred the AA's Admiral's Club. Ah, but most of the airlines have closed down the majority of those little oasises in their airports.

Anyway, I'm back home (okay... at the office) and guess what? It's raining! Go figure.

Well, it's back from the race track for me.

This weekend will be here before you know it, Elk. And you can work on ol' Michelin Man again.

I need to finish scrubbing in the BT010's I put on last week.

So how'd you manage to look tan in the picture? Got a little 'tan in the bottle?' Tweak it in Photoshop?
