Aircooled ZX12R subframe...........

.........or how to save nearly 2lbs. from your rear........

Well, after seeing a few pics of other hacked ZX12s, we (MrSantaFe) and I were inspired to hack some more weight out of his bike. Not that we hadn't already hacked a lot of weight from other parts of the bike but we hadn't done the subframe yet......

Here are some pics. And if you think it is not strong anymore, you'd be surprise, as we (200lbs) stood on all of the subframe areas and we saw zero flex or any signs of giving out. There is probably another 2 ounces somewhere without cutting off any pieces but we figured this was good enough.

Enjoy.

Number of years ago, there was a guy who said he would build a CF subframe if he could come up with 2 customers. I guess there were no takers.

Nah, we spent many hours on that deal. Other than makin' the holes, I did a lot of deburring just so we could handle it w/o cutting us to death. Besides, since we were cutting out ounces, we cut out another 5 ounces out of the rear seat cover that we had already done years ago.

If I were to do another one, I know I could get over 2lbs out of it knowing how far we can go w/o losing structural integrity.

I would be concerned about the strength. Standing on the subframe does not approximate the loads placed on the part while in use.

Even a small bump could have a bad result...remember, force=mass x acceleration.

That being said, the subframe is obviously overbuilt for a single rider. The factory had to consider some pretty heavy loads when they designed the part.

At any rate, good luck with it!

Well, it certainly will be different on the bike as the frame will transmit flex through out the chassis. But after jumping on one side at a time, I think it will be fine for the limited time it sees the street as well as the strip.

Besides, we are still looking at stuffing the built ZX12 engine into a ZX10 frame. We did some weighing of a few of his bikes in his garage today to see what they currently weigh after some mods on 2 of them (that's what you do when it's snowing outside).

Anyhow, here is what we got:

2002 Kawasaki ZX12R weighed in at 492lbs with about 2.5 gallons of fuel. Bike has lighter wheels w/ceramic bearings, Hindle exhaust and a few lightened up parts and some parts removed.

2007 Suzuki GSXR 1000. Road race form. 1/2 gallon of fuel, Carbon Fiber wheels, Tsukigi exhaust, race plastics, removed lights, etc..... weighed 390lbs

2006 Kawasaki ZX10R with completely full tank of petrol, Area P slip-on and pretty much stock otherwise w/o anything taken out weighed 439lbs.

He has as 2004 Kawasaki ZX10R that was possibly the donor frame but it currently has the engine out for some upgraded and tranny repairs. This is his wife's road race bike anyway. Typically the older 04/05s significantly lighter than the 06/07s and figure in race trim it weighs a little lighter than the GSXR, maybe 10-15lbs. Now a ZX10R weighing in at around 400lbs with a nearly 200hp ZX12R engine, now that would be fun at the strip but even more fun at roll-on speeds...........

It may happen for next year's winter project if we can find a decent rolling chassis.

if you want to get really crazy, throw some paint stripper on it, then polish it. oh and cut a set of those rivet nuts for the helmet hooks off, you only need the ones for the seat.
ever thought of making your own CF parts? hey its winter right?

Quite a while back there were a few Carbon Fiber subframes for sale on E-bay. I never was highest bidder, but I did get the Carbon Fiber Front stay bracket off of E-bay, just got lucky. I'll hunt a picture up for you guys. ZX-12 stuff is not easy to find and it seams like a lot of it is on back order when you go to purchase stuff.

thats pretty cool Gary. a subframe would help more in a drag race though. ballast weight can make you quicker if you had wheelie issues like me. 9.28 with 10 pounds of lead by the lights vs 9.35 without it (NA)

that thing looks WICKED!! haha.. not sure about the structural integrity, but it certainly looks interesting!!

. i'd agree tho on caution and opting for CF. the tensile strength of CF.. even a single layer of 2x2 twill.. FAR exceeds that of 6061 aluminum.
the carbon itself heated to a carbonization temp of 1800*C will produce a tensile strength of 820,000 psi. in comparison, heat treated 7075 Al is only 120kpsi and carbon fiber heated from 3000 °C (graphitizing) exhibits a higher modulus of elasticity 77,000,000 psi!!!!!!

just some fun with numbers. carbon fiber isn't hard to work with either.. cheap.. NO. awesome looking and bragging points and safe? hell yes.

as far as making your own CF parts, are the materials expensive? or is the the process just time consuming?

well, sadly its both.
it depends on what weave, what composition (carbon or carbon/kevlar) and how many layers and how complex the structure is.

you can make a simple 2 layer rig layed out over an aluminum trellis and it'll weigh 3 lbs and cost a few hundred bucks.. or someone ELSE can do it and cost ya a grand.

or it can 5 layers of solid cf and cost a small fortune perhaps, but look exotic as hell and be insanely strong.

also depends on if the mold was vacuum-bagged or a fiberglass mold with some sort of filler to press the cf into place.

i LOVE cf, but it IS expensive because the gubmint is sucking it all up for jets and such.

it's similar to working with fiberglass, but unless you don't care about the surface finish, you gotta make sure al lthe air bubbles are out from the epoxy and all.. well. thats a good practice anyway tho.. lol.. bubbles are weak spots.

i think the results can be worth it tho. i've make alot of small cf parts for my bike like kleen air blockoff plates, a sprocket guarrd, a dash.. lots of little things.. i actaully sheat tho..

i got a CF hood from a wrecked car and cut parts out.. but vac bagging and making molds isn't all that bad..
