How cold is 35F for a math idiot like me?
Hey I'm thinking seriously about riding in the cold. I hear all types of equations on how cold it is on a bike at 55 mph and at 35 mph etc... what's your take on it?

Depends on your gear.

about 1.66666667 degrees Celsius :P
srry I dont know how much wind chill affects it, but you may want to invest in snowmobile gear and a double bubble windscreen. heated gloves and visor. I stay warm in my Arctic Cat gear going faster than highway speeds on the trails....

If you get caught out in that temp, you can handle it.Layers is all I can tell you.I'm getting too old for that kind of riding. It loses its appeal. When I rode through the winter,I would feel the cold in my fingers, knees and toes. The tires won't grip as well and your fingers won't have the feel for the brake lever as much either.

just look up wind chill factors
my own rule of thumb is below 40 degress F
you lose 1 degree for every mph
now i know theres a chart somewhere thats more accurate
i might suggest an antifreeze chart or a cold weather survival chart
needless to say not everyones metabolism is the same
i know a guy that works in a 15 below freezer in just his shirt & pants
i cant even with a zero suit on
now he is moving .......................& we have seen him break a sweat......unreal
to most other people thats fatal
on the other hand i rarely sweat ........................80 degrees is NORMAL for me
i cant stand to be cold......kinda drives other people nutz! ! !
i dont like air cond ! ! !
be careful tho extended cold weather riding reduces reaction times significantly
good luck

I use to ride dirt year round in the field and wood, but the idea of riding was alway more fun than the ride. 40 degrees@ 55 on the street with the right gear is not real bad, but it's not going to be as much fun as you think. How far you planning to go? Be careful!

please find these tables
no less there is a variance........as one article/chart speaks to
its NOT an Exact 1 for 1 ratio
http://www.weatherimages.org/data/windchill.html
http://www.weather.gov/os/windchill/index.shtml
there are several variables
still a rider can get an idea of what they have to deal with to avoid frostbite
of hands feet
no less "core" body temp is a huge consideration & as i mentioned b4
reaction times slow tremendously without one noticing
good luck
