A puddle of oil twice but now no leak?
This is really strange! I'd be the first to admit that I know almost nothing when it comes to bike mechanics. In fact my bike has been my learning experience. However I find this very strange. I parked my bike the night before last and there was a puddle of what looked like oil in my garage. I checked the oil level and it was fine? Road it to work very slow and easy. after she set there was another puddle of oil. So I'm really thinking I have a oil pan gasket leak. The guy I bought the bike off of said that he had put a new oil pan on it and the old gasket looked fine so he reused it (Idiot) But that's not the strange part. I noticed the little plastic bottle thing was full of fluid so I drained it before putting it up last night. So I go out this morning and there is no puddle? oil levels look the same I plan on going to lunch an riding it in. what do you guys think? Do I have Kawi oil ghost or what?

Wow that seems like alot of fuel! I did run it pretty hard before I put it away the first night! I know it was a little chilly out side as well. would that cause the overflow to put alot fluid out? Please pardon my ignorance. But If I don't ask I won't learn. thanks in advance

It made rather large puddle! But the oil did not look like it went down. But of course being a Noob I had no idea it could have been the over flow.

the little plastic bottle will catch whatever liquid gets into your air box. the crankcase does vent to the air box, and sometimes if you over fill the bike with oil, it will puke out what it doesnt want, and then you see it in the bottle

could it be that the bike was over filled with liquid even more then what the bottle could handle and that's why I got all of the liquid IE puddles by the bike and no loss of oil?

that much oil is not either.
WHY did he have to replace the oil pan, really isnt the usual thing to do.
no less you could have something blocked off or clogged resulting in your engine
"Puking". i would find the source b4 it Really Co$tS you big time.
riding it while its ailing is NOT a diagnostic, by the time you find out whats wrong
it could be Broke big time or DAMAGED!!!

That makes good since to me! I'm sorry I should have gave a little history on the bike. I got it for a song $1800 (it is a salvage repair) actually after I sold my old school not running 1987 gixxer 1100. It ended up costing me only $700!
It has been down and totalled. The guy that had it befor me had to rebuild the entire bike! when I drained that little bottle the bike has gone back to being dry??! Of course I'm not going to get on it for the rest of the season. But at this point it is my only form of work transportation. I will baby it as much as possible until I will be able to look at it closer. Your suggestion is very wise and I will definately take your advise. I will find out what the problem is and fix it at the cause before it get's costly and or serious!
I know this may sound silly but it looks like it could be coming from the breather box? It could be blow back? Where do you suggest I start? of course after the oil pan gasket.

BTW a hell of alot of fluid came out of that tube where the bottle was on! I have to say I haven't drained it all summer. As a noob It something I guess over looked.

The ZX12 has a another place that oil will come out. That is at the end of the cable where it plugs into the rectifier/regulator. Oil pumps up the through the wiring harness.

if you insist on riding it then one of these great sat or sundays
start in the early morning .........LOOK IT OVER
take the plastic off & check to be certain ALL hoses at true in their
integrity.....NO splits and that they are connected to exactly where they are supposed to go
its sounds like something is blocked off
it sounds like you crankcase is NOT venting or Breathing properly
that could be from the wreck
it could be from not knowing how to get back to square from the guy just piecing it back together
usually a Simple & easy & NOT Costly fix
it simply takes time, all of which will be chaeper than you not knowing whether you
skin it back or not..... or your commute it pukes up a slimy 1/2 quart of oil
onto your rear tyre & you go down......more damage to the bike
& a bike from "you fell down" first aid center
or even as costly you end up blowing your engine
neither are good & far worse than your back story about the salvage bike
check it out, with any luck you will find it & fix & feel damn good about it

You are completely correct! it will be better to be safe than sorry.
She has been dry not a single drop since the drain. I've called a friend of mine who owns a shop. He said to bring it by saturday and he'll give it look! His theory was the crank case not being vented properly as well. He said to be honest with me he is booked until next spring already (from what hear he's good) But he can give it a look and atleast give me some idea of what the issue could be. Of course he said the same thing that I should park it if I can. But he knows my situation. My work is about 5 miles away and he knows I baby the bike. He said to keep an eye on the oil levels until saturday.

like i said i really dont think its going to be expensive or major
yet it could develope that way
safety is always paramount
we all ride for the enjoyment....THRILLS & the huge pleasure we get out of
the experience of riding high performance bikes
yet they are extremely dangerous
no need to take unneccessary risks that threaten family & work
and an individuals well being
i would never say or do anything to contribute to that risk
be smart & good luck
